Gore carries NH (not FL) in 2000 and he subsequently wins the election 271 electoral votes against W. After 9/11, Gore invades Afghanistan but throughout his term the situation remains very unstable. Meanwhile, the US economy remains in a relatively good shape, but growth slowed down since 2003.

The election of 2004:

✓ Former Governor George W. Bush (R-TX)/Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN): 291 EVs.; 50.6%
President Al Gore (D-TN)/Governor Howard Dean (D-VT): 247 EVs.; 47.8%

W did not stand for a third term as TX-Governor in 2002 to focus on his second presidential bid; VP Lieberman is replaced with VT-Governor Howard Dean on the Democratic ticket.

The rest remains unchanged. Iraq does never happen (only sanctions against Saddam, but no invasion). Situation in Afghanistan improved after huge surge of US trops. GOP keeps congress in 2006 midterm elections. In 2008, W runs for second term against Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee. How does the contest turn out?

Kingpoleons map plus Obama winning Iowa. Pretty sure that Bush wouldn't win against Obama.

Does the 2008 recession and financial crisis still occur on schedule in this scenario?

If it does I don't see how the election result is very different from IRL.

It occours, yes. Only change is that the GOP keeps congress in 2006.
