I'm conflicted on this. I have no problem with the likes of George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Oprah Winfrey and so on getting involved in political debate.

I do however have a problem with Donald Trump, Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Shirley Temple etc getting involved.

An absolutely SHOCKING discrepancy between those you approve of and those you don't!

I don't care, but I had to write an essay about this for my Common Core English final, and based on what they gave me I went with celebrities should get involved because that seemed easier to write about, so that's my answer.

No point.

And if they went to Law School or did PoliSci as an undergrad, then they should be encouraged in this day and age. As long as Citizens United goes nowhere and campaigns become more and more Reality TV-esque, a candidate of that calibre would be far more useful than just some whomever politician.

Wow, so liberals can get involved but conservatives can't. And the answer to this question is no

Fine with it, as long as those in the ivory tower don't try to lecture me about how I'm living my life incorrectly.

No, I think it's cool when certain celebrities get involved in politics, as long as they know what they are talking about.

I enjoy listening to some of the opinions of celebrities on both sides, like Natalie Portman and George Clooney on the left and James Woods, Angie Harmon and Jon Voight on the right.

Than there's people like Ashley Judd and Leo DiCaprio (both of who I like as acting professionals) who come off as...lacking in political knowledge. Stacey Dash I have the same feelings toward. She's clearly not stupid but some of her comments...concern me.

Same goes for people like Ted Nugent and Russell Brand who need to STFU about politics and stick to what they are good at. Actually, I'd prefer it if both just retired into privacy in general. Both are massive HPs.

Also, fake celebrities like Lena Dunham

If they have something worthwhile to say, yes. Otherwise, no. (normal)

No, they can go into politics however much they like. But I do not think they should be treated as any sort of authority on politics or policy (I'm looking at you, anti-vaxxer celebrities, you're idiots).

If they formally get into politics, and successfully run for office, I'm more inclined to take their opinions seriously.

I assume your OP was sarcastic, but to answer the question:  Yes, they absolutely have a responsibility to use their platform for good.

However, it'd be best if they could do so with
1) As much humility as possible
2) As much respect for those that disagree as possible
3) Only a small amount of (acknowledged) hypocrisy

I don't care; I just wish they wouldn't do it at the Oscars.

They can do whatever they want, they just shouldn't be trusted as authorities on the subject when clearly the vast majority of them are not.

No, of course not. After all, some celebrities might actually make good politicians. Smiley

I'd assume your average celebrity (especially ones with enough mass respectability to get elected to an office) has more integrity than your average politician.  Smarter too.
