3.5, I suppose.
Here's at least some of what I liked about his Presidency:
1. The stimulus package
2. The repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell
3. His U.S. Supreme Court picks (at least in comparison to the U.S. Supreme Court picks that a Republican U.S. President would have made during this time)
4. The troop surge in Afghanistan
5. The nuclear deal with Iran (better than nothing, no?)
6. The fact that he refused to arm the Syrian rebels. Indeed, I fear that these weapons might have eventually ended up in ISIS's hands had Obama made a different decision in regards to this.
7. The fact that he refused to arm Ukraine's military. Indeed, given the corruption in Ukraine right now, I fear that some of these U.S. weapons might have been sold to Ukrainian separatists had Obama decided the other way on this issue.
Meanwhile, here's at least some of what I disliked about his Presidency:
1. His lack of a day-after plan in Libya
2. The lack of a public option in Obamacare (though I am unsure that this was actually within his power to achieve; indeed, thanks, Joe Lieberman!
)
3. Focusing too much
exclusively on Black victims of public violence and brutality instead of trying to take a broader look at this issue. (Basically, I have a problem with the
exclusivity of this focus.)
4. Placing an excessive focus on Israeli settlements to the point that he
didn't make a distinction between the large settlement blocs near Israel's borders and the small settlements deep inside of the West Bank.
5. Placing red lines in Syria and then not exhibiting firm leadership when these lines were crossed.
6. Appointing Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the head of the DNC.
7. Launching a misguided drive in favor of affirmative consent laws on college and university campuses (with the Office of Civil Rights's 2011 Dear Colleague letter). However, to be fair, I am unsure exactly how much, if any, blame President Obama personally deserves for this. (For the record, I would very likely support
some kind of affirmative consent standard. However, the way that colleges and universities currently appear to be handling affirmative consent (including sometimes by order of the state government, as in both California and New York) appears to be
extremely unfair and screwed-up.
)
Anyway, any thoughts on what I wrote here?
