I think Trump was serious from the start.  I believe he believed he could win the minute he became the GOP frontrunner in that crowded field.

I believe that Trump knew that a huge swath of the GOP weren't getting what they wanted from their Presidential candidates.  Their races had become "Mr. Conservative" contests, while a huge swath of the GOP, while holding many traditional attitudes, was very much wanting a "big government" agenda.

What's Trump been talking about lately that's got folks' attention?  Infrastructure.  It's one of his "Make America Great Again" themes, and its a theme that requires Big Government involvement.  Conservatives blocked infrastructure projects because they required government spending, but a LOT of GOP voters are all for THAT kind of government spending.

Trump knows more about politics than anyone on Atlas.  Indeed, he knows more about politics than most folks who are political pros.  That's the reason he's where he's at today, period.

Donald Trump knows show business, playing the media, and how to influence masses of people.  That, combined with him accidentally hitting the right note at exactly the right time, is why he's where he's at today.

So why can't the others get that?  Trump certainly knows these things, but he knows more than just that.  I believe he has more of a sense where people are really at, intellectually AND emotively, than any other candidate in the last 20 years.
