Someone who was a staunch disaffected anti-establishment voter in the 60's and 70's, but became a Republican after Reagan.

A rural white southerner would be very unlikely to vote for McGovern.

True, but a rural white Southerner who vehemently opposed the Vietnam War might be an exception to this rule.

A rural white southerner would have also been very unlikely to vote for a Republican at that time.

Ignoring the fact I was born 34 years after Goldwater's election, 26 years after McGovern's, and couldn't vote for Romney, I could see myself doing that if I, you know, voted for major parties.

So, basically, someone who is fiscally conservative or libertarian, but opposes war (a category libertarians would fall under).

By the way, I think saying "they became [something]" is cheating in this. Tongue

Look at the 1972 county map.

Again, it was one election.  Most of those voters still voted D for governors, senators, etc.
