WINCO is big on the west coast (well, Washington Idaho Nevada California Oregon, hence the name) and I think they're worked-owned. Fruits and vegetables aren't great, but everything else is, you can buy in bulk and it's pretty cheap.

Seems like a misleading term since it the individual is not managing anything directly.

but, it can be great or it can be awful, depending.  As an idea, sure, it's worth considering.
