Trump is known to have a problem with the highly educated, and this is said to be a problem in states like Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina (for example: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/26/upshot/the-one-demographic-that-is-hurting-hillary-clinton.html).  I get the first two, but why is it a problem in NC in particular?  NC falls below the national average for college grads and advanced degrees.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_educational_attainment

Now if one looks at whites only, NC may rank higher, but it seems the impact of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill professionals and transplants is greatly overstated in terms of the impact on NC as a whole.

Every time you think of North Carolina, just think of Virginia 8 years ago.

It is in major part because of the large amount of non-white voters in North Carolina. Trump does worse with college-educated voters, but it is not uniform across all states. Pennsylvania's projected margins among college/no college educated white voters for 2016 is 44.2% (college educated) vs 33% (no college), yet he is doing better there. So really it is a combination that helps Hillary - Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina all have large amounts of minorities, with Virginia having less minorities than NC but substantially more college-educated white voters.

That would suggest that North Carolina will be a near bellwether this time (VA in 2008 voted Obama +6, country was Obama +7).

Because Romney already won huge margins with working class whites and Trump has little room to improve. And because Trump may do worse than Romney in Wake, Mecklenberg counties with educated whites.
