Speaker Ryan, MIKE PENCE, and other Republicans are now criticizing Trump openly or passive-aggressively like in Pence's case.

That sort of negates the argument that this was some sort of brilliant campaign move. It was a stupid move that even Republicans can't defend.

The Republicans didn't nominate Pat Buchanan for President until 2016, see.
Yet they remained major portions of the base. It has been a boiling cauldron for years.

Lol, it seems like every time Trump makes an idiotic blunder, there's some hot take that he's actually playing 4 dimensional chess.  He isn't, he's just an idiot.

This.

For God's sake, he could win a 45 state landslide somehow and you'd still say he ran a terrible campaign. You can't even admit he's a worthy adversary when he's literally beating your candidate?

That link to triangulation is tenuous at best.  The Trump strategy and triangulation are fundamentally different, different implementation, different strategies, different goals.  You can't just say that they're basically the same thing because they involve the candidate saying something meaningless.  If that were the case, you could say essentially any two things in politics are the same thing.

The thing is, yes, if any of these stories were alone, you could explain them away and people would forget about it.  The problem is that when you have story after story corroborating the same thing, it doesn't matter if you have an explanation for each individual thing (good or half-baked), people are still going to start to think.

He is running a sh**tty campaign, seriously what has he done that you can even say is smart? He managed to piss off every group outside of non-college educated whites and he needs to make inroads with those groups to even have a chance.

Being a point ahead on RCP at the height of your convention bump ain't something to shout from the rooftops.

Being a point ahead doesn't mean that he's more likely to win than lose. On the other hand, it makes Clinton's victory look much less secure than it did in mid-June. That Trump is running a historically inept campaign makes this even more notable. That's disturbing enough to merit some rooftop-shouting. Maybe even in a literal sense.

He's also spending hardly anything on advertising, and Hillary is piling in millions for a tepid lead/tie at best. I don't think anyone could conclusively say either candidate is running a stellar campaign at this point.

He's a media mastermind and that's why he is doing as well as he is. Does that mean anything to you? He is manipulating the public in negative, self-aggrandizing and self-adulating ways.

But the QUALITY of his campaign, the quality of the things he says, the quality of his character all suck swamp water.

And that's why he's running a terrible campaign and is an unworthy adversary.

That doesn't mean her paid media campaign was useless. She has a lot of vulnerabilities, isn't well-liked and has had an awful month. Something was going to give eventually, as paid media doesn't guarantee you a lead, even if your opponent is spending virtually nothing.

The other thing is that a ton of her spending is on organization, something which wouldn't pay off until election day.

Of course, they did fall into the Trump trap.

1) You can't hack a server that's offline in FBI custody. So any suggestion that Trump suggested that Russia hack Hillary's server today, is disingenuous.
2) The Hillary camp admitted her e-mails were a matter of national security. Whoops.
3) Hillary doesn't want to be talking about her e-mails (by far her most vulnerable issue) in the middle of her convention. It's supposed to be about positive things.

So yeah, Trump hijacked the news cycle on the third day of the DNC. Advantage Trump.

Pretty much this. Trump supporters may paint him has some expert troll, but in reality he's the equivalent of a white-trash s--tposter from /pol/.

No. Trump's comments are meant to decrease, not increase, his poll numbers.

I disagree. Trump wants to derail the DNC.

If he wanted to decrease his poll numbers permanently, he'd release his post 9/11 tax returns.

These articles always make me laugh. Yeah, Trump is so smart! All these dumb/damaging statements he makes day-in, day-out, nope, not gaffes, it's all 4d, wait no, 12d chess!

He's not executing any brilliant strategy. He's literally just a moron in regards to public relations/politics/government, with a massive ego and no self control. It's that simple.

Your problem, Virginia, is that you do not understand Trump's game. Neither does Hillary.

And is Hillary any better character wise? Really? Really?

Yes she is if you took the time to do the research and find out, rather than just buy into all the negative hype of the "cartoon character" the GOP [and I would add the media] has created about her these past 25 years. (Bill Clinton's brilliant characterization from last night at the DNC.)

What is it with Democrats and conspiracy theories? The media is rigged against Hillary! Putin is trying to make America a satellite state! Did Donald Trump invent AIDs and crack cocaine to kill Democratic voters too? You guys are spooked!
