The MN Star Tribune endorses Trump (after endorsing Gore, Kerry and Obama twice):

Not an editorial board endorsement.

No, they don't. Did you actually read it?  That's not an editorial board endorsement; it's an opinion piece by one columnist -- who even states within it that he's not sure who he'll vote for (or even if he'll vote). He's just expressing what he sees as elements of Trump's appeal that might get the writer's vote.

First sentence: "As of today, I have not decided whether I can, in good conscience, vote for a presidential candidate this November."

Later in the article: "But can I vote for Trump? I am not sure, but let me give you the case for “yes” that has some appeal for me."

The Repository's endorsement history has been mixed.  Like this year, they endorsed neither candidate in 2012, and in that endorsement said "Since 1980, when The Repository became a politically independent newspaper, the editorial board has endorsed three Republicans and two Democrats for president."  I was able to find some of them online, and the history is:

2012 - None
2008 - Obama
2004 - Bush
2000 - Bush (presumably, based on the 3R, 2D listed above)
1996 - Clinton
1992 - Clinton (http://www.cantonrep.com/x7658287/-You-could-feel-the-earth-tremble-A-brief-history-of-Rep-endorsements noted that it was the first Democratic endorsement in its 177-year existence)
1988 & prior - Republican candidate

Am I the only one who thinks newspaper endorsements is a bad idea?

Why do you think they're a bad idea?

Calls into question over journalism objectiveness. Even though it's from their editorial board, it does give a vibe that their endorsement might affect their reporting a bit.

To quote an old journalistic adage: "News is sacred...comment is free".
I would argue the opposite as I like editorial endorsements, although they will not necessarily sway my opinion.

By allowing editorial opinions, the media can focus on independent reporting, without the need to "influence" news. Of course, human nature being what it is, individual biases are always to be expected.

Not shocking, but:

Los Angeles Times: Hillary Clinton would make a sober, smart and pragmatic president. Donald Trump would be a catastrophe.

Any evidence that newspaper endorsements affect voting? Any evidence that anyone reads them, apart from political obsessives?

The general opinion on this is mixed.  The only formal study I've seen is somewhat old (https://news.brown.edu/articles/2008/10/endorsement) which concludes that there is a small effect.  IMO if there's any effect, it's at the margins -- which would be significant only in a close election or one with a high number of undecideds.

I think one of the biggest effects is likely to be one mentioned in the Brown study, which is "unexpected" endorsements.  It surprises exactly nobody if the NY Times endorses Clinton.  But when solidly Republican papers like the Union Leader or the Dallas Morning News endorse her, that might cause some of their readers to think more seriously about voting for her.  And if they were on the fence, it might tip some votes to her.

Cincinnati Enquirer endorses Clinton after a century of endorsing Republicans.

Certainly a major shift for the Enquirer editorial policy. Love this quote:

"Do we really want someone in charge of our military and nuclear codes who has an impulse control problem?"

Who wants to bet that Clinton will use it at the debate?

Comment sections in local papers are almost always dumpster fires filled with right-wingers threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

So, of the 7 endorsements HRC has for the moment, 4 papers had endorsed Romney back in 2012.

Not an editorial board endorsement; the OP is misleading.  It's just an opinion piece by one writer.  First sentence:

"As of today, I have not decided whether I can, in good conscience, vote for a presidential candidate this November."

And later:

"But can I vote for Trump? I am not sure, but let me give you the case for “yes” that has some appeal for me."

Trump 0

I'll keep posting these running totals unless there's some objection to doing so; I'm interested in it and figured others may be too.
