How would that somehow prove Mormons are a cult? If anything, it'd demonstrate their attachments to the values of compassion, tolerance, humility, and the teachings of their faith. They haven't forgotten what it's like to be systematically persecuted by their fellow Americans for their faith and treated as outsiders in this land. That they would so overwhelmingly object to the bigotry of this demagogue would be more of a testament to the goodness of their faith and values.

One could make a strong argument that all organized religion are cults...

That being said, Mormons in particular have been targeted by evangelicals since the 1970s, and obviously Protestants going back much much longer prior to the rise of the "Modern" evangelical movement.

Some segments of the evangelical protestant community consider Catholicism a cult to this day.

The reality is that a systematic persecution and denigration of minority religious beliefs from a dominant religious majority, and using the term "cult" to describe those of another religious background is disparaging in the extreme.

So either all religions are cults, or none at all, and as an American I will happily practice mutual coexistence with family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors that belong to all of these various cults representing 90+% of the American population.
