I once asked Bono if he'd date a girl with a hammer and sickle tattoo and he said he wouldn't care since she probably only got it because she thought it'd be cool and didn't really believe in the ideology, which is probably true.

Basically, what percentage of "communists" in the US are really like me and just think communist symbols and slogans are cool, and how many actually believe in the ideology and have read up on all that? Joe Republic described the difference of me vs. migrendel.

Maybe 25% - many just want to express anger at what they view as the injustice of capitlalism, and they don't really have a better alternative to turn to.

Most are either 14 year olds or washed up 65 year olds.

No, Kerry was just a liberal.  However, seeing Gore get 48% of the vote means 48% of Americans are Communists Smiley

Probably less than 15%.  Just like all the "punks" who think anarchism is cool, yet they're really too undereducated to know any better.

The punk anarchy is individualist anarchy(Pierre Proudhon), not communist anarchy(Chomsky, Bakunin, et. al)

I am cynical enough to agree with that sentiment. Political parties such as the Socialist Workers Party, the Workers World Party, and the like are composed of fifteen-year-olds who probably picked up their Marxism from whatever heavy metal band they happen to be listening to at the moment. Such people are very adept at repeating whatever poorly considered ideas they picked up from the increasingly incoherent Noam Chomsky (who has devolved from a misguided linguistic theorist to a shrill media whore before our very eyes), but I doubt they believe them, let alone understand them.

Some of these puerile lackeys have heard of Marcuse, but they abhor intellectually serious Marxism, such as that of Lukacs or Althusser, lacking the lurid appeal that is such an effective draw for young people. As a communist, I can say that many of our erstwhile "comrades" have abandoned their philosophical commitment and settled down in Scarsdale at just about the same point they got over their cases of facial acne. You would be amazed how many branch managers for Citibank know the words to the Internationale, and that is precisely why American communism is in such dire shape.

Very few. I find it funny when I go into stores ("Skate shopes", hole in the wall places, whatever you want to call them) and see a Hammer and Sickle t-shirt on sale just a few spaces away from a confederate flag T- shirt.

I must protest.
As a fan of the metal genre, I nver ever once heard a metal song with a communistic message.
At best, fascist, but never communistic.

Take a look at the question.  It's asking how many "communists" are actually communist.

Unless you actually think that 100% of America consider themselves communist... Tongue

yes. Migrendel's talking about punk. Metal is typically more right leaning even though it tends to be anti-religion. Much like opebo pre-transformation.

you said he was "a real communist, not just someone who thinks it's cool"

Only some black metal is anti-religion, though there are a few Christian black metal bands(Huh).
There are also a few death metal bands that are, but they really only represent like 1% of it. It's worth to note that Black Sabath, the creators of metal, was sort of Christian(see After forever from the Master of Reality album).
