PPP should do a poll. Because I bet the majority of Hillary supporters think he's a hero and the Trump supporters hate him.

Would a majority of either group know who he is?

He's taught about in public schools generally in or in some cases before middle school, so the answer is 'maybe'.

Wow.  I suppose that's not suprising considering you surely would have been fighting to keep your slaves back then.

Nah, he's just a Democratic sympathizer. Rumor has it he used to be a member of the DPUSA. He's an apologist for Democratic racist policies and dog whistling like "John Brown, another person who likes dark skinned people, was a terrorist. I'm not saying I don't like dark skinned people. I'm not saying I like slavery. I'm just saying a terrorist opposed slavery."

Oh fair enough. Embarrassingly, I first learnt about him on Atlas.

Terrorist, doesn't matter whether we agree with his cause or not.  If you're opposed to U.S. military bases in Saudi Arabia that doesn't mean it's ok for you to think 9/11 was ok.

Would you say this about George Washington, or pre-imprisonment Nelson Mandela?

John Brown was one of the greatest Americans of his time. He can also be described, without much unfairness or inaccuracy, as a terrorist. But so what? With 150 years of historical distance, I have no meaningful objection to abolitionist terrorism, and neither should any of you.

Yeah, after 150 years, I suppose I shouldn't considering without him the entire course of history would probably be different enough that I wouldn't even exist due to some ancestors not shacking up.

Here's an interesting question:  are the folks who fired on Ft Sumter freedom fighters for helping to bring a relatively swift end to slavery?

George Washington was a military general engaged in a military conflict which is obviously not terrorism.

Mandela pre-imprisonment isn't really anything to be proud of, in fact a key part of the Mandela story is how he transformed from an angry man to a loving, forgiving man while in prison.  That said, he advocated nonviolence and intentionally designed his tactics to minimize the risk of actual loss of life.

I'm going to assume that your fingers slipped, causing you to type "interesting" where you meant to say "tedious."

Um, ok? If you are going to tell everyone how they should or shouldn't feel about some historical act, it seems like this sort of question would be unavoidable if we are approaching the subject of the Civil War with 150 years of historical distance as you suggest.

I mean, sure, in retrospect.

Whatever. Would you say it about Francis Marion?

The definition of "Cool motive. Still Murder".

Yes, slavery was an abomination that needed to be abolished by all means, including war. His actions, however, were those of a deranged lunatic who likely helped galvanize pro-slavery forces now that they had a compelling face to make their "demon".

I'll be the ninnies that condemn Mr. Brown are the same losers that call Lt. Col. Oliver North an "HP". Let's stop giving patriotism a bad name.

Most Trump supporters (with the exception of the few cool ones like my good friend Cathcon) would certainly call him an HP. I'd argue that many Hillary voters living in the suburbs would say that he had the right idea but went TOO FAR.

As for the question, massive FF of course.
