Heath Ledger, but Mark Hamell comes in a close second.

Jared Leto did alright, but he just didn't have much to do. His character arc can be summed up as "chased Harley the whole movie almost completely off screen." Meanwhile, Ledger's Joker arc can be described as "wrought terror for the entire length of the film, changing the game everyone he appeared."

In no particular order: Hamill, Ledger, and Romero.

Leto was honestly the worst. Not because of his acting, which was admirable, but because the tone, look and character they gave this incarnation of the Joker was vomit inducing.

Mark Hamill is the definitive Joker
^This. Heath Ledger's portrayal was amazing but let's be honest here, a lot of the hype for his joker comes from the fact that he passed right before the film was released.

Why only one option? Live-action and animation are very different mediums.

Doing nearly everything off the voice vs physically getting into costume and make-up and acting are very very different things, especially for characters like Batman and The Joker.

But, in no particular order: Nicholson, Richardson, and Hamill...with Jeff Bennett (from Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as the best "campy" Joker.

Ledger is the worst live-action version due to not being "jokey" enough and delivering too many lectures instead of doing things on a whim...Ledger's acting was great and it fit the atmosphere perfectly...but Nolan's universe is just a pretentious, dull-paced, meandering mess anyway.

And Romero's Joker lacks any sort of menace, too "jokey" and not enough depth, Riddler was literally a better archnemesis, when The Joker isn't the star enemy...somethin's gone wrong.

Haven't seen Leto's version yet, but all indicators point to him being the best since Nicholson on the silver screen.

EDIT: My pity vote tosses between the one who murdered Batman's parents (Nicholson), and the one with dreadlocks and a straitjacket (Richardson), because the one that implanted a chip into Robin is overvoted (Hamill)

EDIT 2: Pity vote goes to Nicholson.

Gotta go with Hamill.

Of the cinematic ones, I actually prefer Nicholson (which is a bit weird considering I like TDK more than Batman 1989).

In terms of live action I've always enjoyed Nicholson's portrayal (particularly because of his sense of humor, I honestly laughed at his macabre jokes), and in animation terms it can only be Hamill, it seems that most people agree that indeed that is how the Joker should sound.

I've never heard a bad word about Hamill as Joker, so him.  (I've seen very little of the show myself)

Ledger > Nicholson

Top three:
1. Heath Ledger
2. Jack Nicholson
3. Mark Hamill

Honestly, I dare someone to watch The Dark Knight and see Heath Ledge there. I was shocked at how amazing that performance was.

HL.

Surprised there weren't that many votes for Jack, but i guess that's generational.

"Generational" is always influencing our outlook. I grew up with that Joker:

so my answer will always be Hamill, regardless of me being able to appreciate a great job Heath Ledger did.

Done it plenty of times, too much tongue hangings and lectures...not enough actual jokes.

This guy is far more interesting.

Temporary bump to make the point that this will have to be updated what with the incoming Lego Batman Movie....which appears be the first actually good DC Movie since Nolan's Trilogy.

Zach Galifianakis is The Joker this time around.
