I would try to get conscientious objector status, and if that failed, I would go to Canada.

Most government jobs require you to be registered.

Indeed, as well as the free money for university, which still exists although they're tighter now.  My brother, who died at the relatively young age of 52 about 11 months ago, was an absolute objector and he never registered for selective service either.  He was the only person I knew well who bragged about not being registered, although I suspect such attitudes are more common nowadays.  He and I discussed that many times when we were younger.  "I don't give a flying fuck whether I can get free government money.  It's not their money anyway--it's ours--and I don't see why I should have to promise to kill people or defend bad policy just to get a bit of it back."  He was the prototypical libertarian.  Owned many guns, liked to hunt and camp, stayed high, used whatever drugs were available to him, and showed great hostility toward US government policy generally, both domestic and foreign.  He also never voted, which I assume is a very libertarian tendency and probably explains why they can't break double digits, even when the main choices are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

In the present day? Sure, whatever. My degree is useless, so it's not like I'm leaving behind my future by getting weapons training and travel experience.

It really depends on the cause of the war. If it was another Vietnam, then no, not out of cowardice but out of my immense human rights observance. Another WW2, I would do so.

Put me in the "depends on the war" camp. (normal/non-coward)

If it was a worthy war (and I was still of serving age), I'd have joined up long before they got to me in a draft.  But since I'm a bit of a pussy, I'd still join the USAF like I did here in real life.

Actually, let me expand.

I'd serve in either the U.S. or Israel (I have dual citizenship), but I deferred my Israeli service since I've never lived there and don't plan on living there, but If I did move there, I'd serve.

I'd be more likely to serve in the U.S., however, as I've lived here all of my life.

This, assuming I met the physical requirements (I'm not fat or anything, but I've never played on a sports team, gone to the gym a lot of my own free will (unless you count taking an extra trimester of gym in HS), or otherwise particularly cared about being "physically fit". ).

If my country drafted me to serve, and I was truly loyal to the country, then I like to think that I would serve. If it was a war that the national survival truly depended on (like ARW/1812/ACW/WW2 or 1948/1967/1973), I like to think that I would join voluntarily.

But, having never been placed in either position, I don't think I truly know.

Oh, yeah. I read the initial post wrong.

I would probably serve, unless I was 99% sure I could dodge and get off scot free.

When I was 18, DADT was still in effect, so I would've lied and said I was gay. Barring that, I would go to New Zealand. I'm still under 25, so I would probably try for conscientious objector or flee to New Zealand.

Actually, one of the most interesting questions about any scenario in which the draft were activated is how selective the military would be in terms of physical fitness. It's not difficult to imagine them rejecting something like two-thirds of those whose numbers come up, especially if they widen the draft pool by including women. Most Americans, even in their early twenties, do not meet the military's definition of fit for service.

According to an MI ANG app I almost started filling out, more than 15 uses of marijuana renders one permanently ineligible for military service, so honest people would also be disqualified.

I definitely would serve if drafted, no question about it.  Heck, right now, if I have a hard time getting a job after college, I'd probably try to enlist in Officer Candidate School for the Navy or Air Force.  I've never hard any ethical qualms with respect to military service.

I'd probably try to volunteer as an officer. Actually one of the guys in my accounting classes was in the military and became a logistics officer. Apparently they like having CPA's in those roles. It seems like a relatively safe way to spend a war.

Doesn't that basically mean the army discriminates by socio-economic status? People wealthy enough to afford the right kind of studies get the safe desk jobs, while those who can't have to face death and injury daily.

I'm too old to be drafted now according to current US law, but if I were drafted, I would have served, although I wouldn't have been happy about it.

I'd probably try to serve in a non-combat role.
