Served my 9-month civil service, because I told the military commission at my draft hearing that I'm not willing to serve with a gun in the military.

Best decision ever and great 9 months.

When was the last time Austria was involved in a major war?

Probably #1.

ETA:  What percentage of Austrian troops had to go to Afghanistan?

Depends on if there is conflict, if I believe in conflict, and if the military would even accept me if I was forced to choose.

Considering I'm not against conscription I shouldn't bitch about a draft.

Definitely the 6-month military service; will be quicker, seems much more interesting, and the chance of actually having to fight seems pretty minute.

ETA:  What percentage of Austrian troops had to go to Afghanistan?

A) 1938-1945 of course.

B) Don't know if this is a serious question or not, but ... 0% (no troops there, unless you count a handful or so military experts who are training the Afghan police).

A quick comparison with the poll on top with the actual statistics here:

The Forum users are slightly more likely than drafted Austrian males to choose civil service.

Drafted Austrian males in 2014: 45% chose military service, 40% civil service, 15% were unfit

Atlas Forum: 47% civil service, 42% military service, 11% unfit to serve

6 month military service.  If I was Austrian I'd love the opportunity to show my appreciation to the United States of America by helping its military fight for peace and justice around the world.

9-month civil service for sure.  I would never qualify for military service even if I wanted to due to mental health reasons.  (I'd previously considered being in the military as a chaplain until I found out training is about as rigorous as it is for reserve and combat enlisters.)  I'm still not ruling out a term in the Peace Corps, though.  And it's not popular to say, but the US military over the past few decades has been so far cucked and pivoted around false impressions of "manliness" that I have no desire to be in the company of troops while on the job, and there's no way on earth I could bear showering with other men.

The politics or cause wouldn't sway me, either.
