I got into an argument with my co-worker today on this while I was listening to it. She said that it was actually pretty good except for the screaming that ruins it. I explained the screaming is an integral part and I like it. However I have realized that unlike most music of the type, this song would still be pretty "complete" if the screaming was removed, just long batches of instrumentals. Still would be good, but better as it is.

I'm generally of the school of thought that music is better without screaming, but maybe I'm just a music snob.

in the case of most BAAO songs, better. Joel is one of the best vocalists around nowadays. So much raw emotion and he replicates it live as well.

A well-placed scream can amp up a good rock number. The occasional scream of "Yeah", especially towards the end of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" definitely added to the impact. But if Roger Daltry just screamed lyrics for the whole song those screams would lose their impact. That's the way I hear the screaming vocals in the linked song - they lose impact because the scream is always there, not just to accent phrases.

He's also one of the best lyricists ever (although I'm sure if I wasn't Christian I wouldn't appreciate them quite as much)

have you heard of Silent Planet? Joel features on a song from their first record and their lyrics are incredibly intelligent.

Unless you're Jon Bon Jovi showing JUST how high you can sing while still maintaining a raspy voice, you shouldn't be screaming in a song.  Or it sucks.

Yeah. I like metal and I agree screaming generally isn't good, especially in the chorus.

Hmm, I think you'd like Joel's lyrics at least (gave an example here), even though he's become my go-to example of an Italian-American who isn't Catholic. BTW I also just recently found out the church he goes to is actually nominally a Disciples of Christ one, which is pretty interesting for San Diego.

That doesn't describe that song AT ALL.

LOL. 1-Being As An Ocean isn't even remotely metal. 2-Like most post-hardcore bands, their songs do not have verses and choruses.

I agree with this. Screams should be motivated within the context of the song. Otherwise, it's just background noise.

I was talking about general music and not the song in particular.

Here's actually a great example of why I would argue that yes, that actually does make you a music snob. Imagine this song with no screaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjH4htz8czU
