When is the last time a Democratic Governor or Senator from a Southern state actually won the White vote?

Phil Bredesen probably did in 2002, I don't think TN has a very high black population, so he'd have to do well among whites. I don't have any data though.

I was focusing a Deep Southern state, like an old Confederacy state.  Something like Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Arkansas, etc. . .  Not the new South.

The last Democrat to win the white vote was Lyndon Johnson.

Clinton did not win the white vote, and neither did Carter.

No, not in a Presidential race.  I meant in a Gubernatorial or Senatorial race, who is the last Democrat in the Deep South to win the White vote?

It is part of the South. It certainly has more in common with Alabama than it does with South Dakota.

I would think Carter at least won the white vote in most of the South, though?
