Lord knows, what the people of Baton Rouge need is a massive distraction and diversion of resources.

Cute, but no.

Bush's error wasn't that he didn't show up, it was that he put someone completely unqualified in as FEMA director and they botched the response. There's no suggestion that they're not getting the resouces they need now.

I've ALWAYS been of the view the people like the President and the dramas they bring need to stay away from active disaster zones and not divert resources from those who need it.

I really thought Winfield was becoming reasonable but this shows he's happy to hype up out of context situations to make a political hack point.

So by your definition, someone who believes the President should show up personally at one of the most devastating disasters in U.S. history, and give comfort, encouragement and assurance to the victims, is playing the political hack card

THEN DEAL      ME      IN!      (to paraphrase Hillary)

(And I began this discussion a full day before the White House announced that Obama would be going to Louisiana)

AGAIN... because his showing up whilst the disaster is still happening, noting these are floods that take days to peak and recede, not a storm that comes through in a few hours, is more a hindrance for local community actively being affected. He should go, of course, but only when his presence isn't a distraction for the public services that are much more necessary to help their community. Taking those responders away from their primary tasks so he looks good politically is far, far worse.

He's doing what he should be doing. Providing resources and support and only turning up when it isn't counter-productive.
