Wow, you all think it's perfectly fine for misanthropic billionaires to put journalists out of business for daring to write things they disagree with.

Get on board the Trump Train and his pledge to "open up the libel laws."

Except that's not what happened at all.

Yes it is.

Peter Thiel is just bitter that Gawker "outed" him years ago and used the fact that POS Hulk Hogan irresponsibly made a sex tape that was leaked as pretext to get his revenge.

Gawker isn't journalism so much as it is a smear machine.

How is providing factual information "smearing"?

I haven't been following this too closely, but what exactly did Gawker do that was illegal? They certainly didn't smear him if they only published factual information, no matter how embarassing. Unless they sent someone over to bug his house or plant a recorder in his apartment, they must have stolen the tape? Linda Tripp recording Monica Lewinsky was illegal under Maryland law... That doesn't mean Drudge deserved to be shut down for publishing it.

That sex tape was recorded and released without Hogan's consent or knowledge and the courts already ruled that Gawker was wrong for sharing it.  It's a matter of privacy.  Why does terrible journalism deserve any sympathy?

Not that this is relevant to the lawsuit, but I'd love to know what of any journalistic value was lost when Gawker does little besides post clickbait and stuff like this just to get a rise out of people.

Sounds like the fault lies with the person who filmed him and released the tape. Once the tape is out there, why should others have to ask for "permission" to acknowledge that it exists?

Are you suggesting that journalists who covered Marion Barry doing cocaine on tape should have been sued because he was being filmed without his knowledge or permission?

The difference being here, of course, that sting operations aren't illegal and the act of videotaping Hogan having sex was not a sting operation nor was it authorized to be shared or distributed.  I'd think this is all fairly obvious...

The reason Thiel had a grudge against Gawker is perfectly valid, they outed him without his consent. And they have outed plenty of other gays for years quite irresponsibly. Yeah, good riddance.

But this thing would have played out the same way regardless of whether Thiel's grudge was righteous. That's the dangerous thing.

I think Peter Thiel's sexual orientation is very much a public matter when he supports the Republican Party, one of the most virulently anti-gay parties in the West.

Exposing the hypocrisy of the rich and powerful is what journalists have always done.

Gawker calculated that there was no way that Hogan would be able to fight them through the courts, forgetting that they had previously made an enemy of an extremely rich and obviously obsessive man. They gambled and they lost and they don't deserve our pity even if the people who destroyed them are perhaps not terribly nice either.

Of course I'm not going to shed a tear over some trashy internet tabloid, but what this story says about the power of American plutocracy is not exactly reassuring.
