The election of 1896 is one of the most important in the nation's history. The Republican victory established the GOP as the majority party until the Great Depression, but more importantly, it was a victory for the cities and a mandate for continued industrialization.

I, of course, would have voted for McKinley. Bryan preached a disturbing blend of fundamentalism and wild-eyed populism. His economic theories were misguided at best, and his attacks on business and urban life in general smack of demogoguery.

Assuming we have 20/20 hindsight and this isn't one of those "if you lived during and could vote in the 1896 election..." I would have to throw my full support behind William McKinley.

He made this country a true superpower by letting us become a even more industrial nation and led us into the Spanish American War in which we picked up the important territories of the Philippines and Guam.

Plus I was also born on his birthday Cheesy

I should have made that clear; this is with hindsight.

I think they were both horrible, but with hindsight I would have voted Bryan, becuase that would have prevented TR from ever becoming president.

Bryan. He was right about gold, and wasn't an imperialist.

William McKinley easily. One of our best Presidents, and in my opinion, the greatest U.S. President.

Right about gold, but for the wrong reasons. He would have been a disaster as President.

Bryan- He was right about gold; he was right about social darwinism; anti-imperialist... I dont really think he was associated with the excesses of Southern racism so he could have perhaps helped the South channel its populism into a more productive channel... economics

If only the democratic populism had succeeded in the South/West and the Republicans continued to be TR-style progressives, we would have a beautiful party system, indeed...

I would have a very hard time deciding who to vote for in each election...

The GOP was already the majority party, and had been since 1860, which was already a mandate for industrialization over agrarian interests.

While I would have voted Bryan, TR is my favorite President of all time (although that has more to do with his personality than his politics).

Had I been alive then, I probably would have voted for Bryan.  But with the value of hindsight, I would have voted for McKinley.

Bryan might have been on to something with the idea of Free Silver, though it would have caused severe inflation.  However, the farmers claimed that they would have benefited from inflation as it would help raise the prices on crops and allow them to pay off their debts to various creditors.  It might have been good for rural America as a whole instead of having many farmers suffering from debt.

Bryan was against the annexation of Puerto Rico and the Phillippines, which I commend him for.  At the same time, on matters of foreign affairs he was very isolationist, which I believe was ultimately a losing strategy.  As one of the top industrial powers of the time, it was time for the US to take its place in the increasingly global economy, which McKinley did much to propagate.  So I have mixed feelings about both.
