Philip Hunter, CNN news anchor: It is election night in America. I would like to welcome our viewers all around the world. Today, millions of Americans are standing in line to make peaceful decisions about how and by whom they want to be governed. It's not just the presidency that's at stake, there are also interesting Senate and gubernatorial races that we will keep an eye on. Tonight marks the end of a long, hard-fought campaign to succeed Democratic President Chris Martinez, who chose to not to seek a second term. Republican Governor Miguel Sanchez of Texas and Democratic Vice President Allen Mitchell of Mississippi are locked in a very, very close race that could be the closest election since 2000 and maybe in the history of this country.

It is now 7 PM Eastern time and we can make some projections.

-CNN Projection-

GEORGIA                                                                                VIRGINIA
President                                                                                     President
18 Electoral votes                                                                    14 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                    WINNER
ALLEN MITCHELL                                                       ALLEN MITCHELL

INDIANA                                                                                 SOUTH CAROLINA
President                                                                                      President
11 Electoral votes                                                                    10 Electoral votes

NO PROJECTION                                                                 NO PROJECTION

KENTUCKY                                                                              VERMONT
President                                                                                        President
8 Electoral votes                                                                         3 Electoral votes

NO PROJECTION                                                                NO PROJECTION

We can project that Allen Mitchell will carry the state of Georgia and its 18 electoral votes. We can also project that Mr. Mitchell will carry Virginia, one of the most Democratic states in the country, and its 14 electoral votes. Really no surprise here, neither in Georgia nor in Virginia.

Right now, we are in no position to be able to project a winner in these states: The key battleground state of South Carolina as well as Vermont, Indiana and Kentucky. We have, however, conducted exit polling in all of these states and we want to share our results with you. Keep in mind: These are exit poll results and estimates, they may not necessarily reflect the outcome of the race:

-CNN EXIT POLL RESULTS-

INDIANA                                                                    SOUTH CAROLINA
EXIT POLL                                                                EXIT POLL
President                                                                       President

Sanchez (R) - 52%                                       Sanchez (R) - 47%
Mitchell (D) - 45%
                                      Mitchell (D) - 50%

KENTUCKY                                                              VERMONT
EXIT POLL                                                                EXIT POLL
President                                                                       President

Sanchez (R) - 52%                                      Sanchez (R) - 43%
Mitchell (D) - 44%
                                     Mitchell (D) - 50%

In the crucial, crucial battleground state of South Carolina, Mr. Mitchell is ahead of Gov. Miguel Sanchez by 3 points, 50%-47%.

In the state of Indiana, Mr. Sanchez is ahead by 7 points, 52%-45%.

In the state of Kentucky, which usually votes Republican by wide margins, Mr. Sanchez is ahead, but just by 8 points, 52%-44%.

And finally, in Vermont, a Democratic-leaning state, Mr. Mitchell is ahead of Mr. Sanchez by 7 points, 50%-43%.

Taking a look at our electoral map, this is where the race stands:

Mitchell (D) - 32 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 0 EVs

Undecided - 32 EVs

Hunter: Right now, Vice President Allen Mitchell has 32 Electoral votes, while Republican Miguel Sanchez has none. States with a total of 32 Electoral votes are still too early or too close to call.

What's the composition of the House?  Based on who would have been making SCOTUS appointments, it's likely that gerrymandering is still very legal...

Republicans 243
Democrats 212

Hunter: Let's go to Christopher Lee, who is following the Senate races for us. Christopher, you can make some projections, right?

-CNN Projection-

GEORGIA                                                                        VIRGINIA
Senator                                                                                 Senator

WINNER                                                                               WINNER
JASON CARTER                                                      MIKE FISHER

KENTUCKY
Senator

WINNER
THOMAS MASSIE

SOUTH CAROLINA
Senator

NO PROJECTION

Lee: Yes, CNN can make some projections. In the state of Georgia, the incumbent three-term Democratic Senator Jason Cater easily defeats U.S. Representative Rob Davis in what was not much of a competitive race. In the state of Virginia, a very blue state, Democratic Governor Mike Fisher will be elected to this open seat. And finally, in Kentucky, also not much of a surprise, CNN can project the return of Senator Thomas Massie. He easily defeats Constance Smith.

We do not have enough information yet the project the South Carolina Senate race, where incumbent first-term Senator Evan Campbell is in a very close race with the former Democratic governor of the state, Mike Morris.

So far, there will be at least 34 Republicans in the next United States Senate and at least 36 Democrats. Democrats need to pick up six seats tonight in order to retake the Senate, five if Mr. Mitchell wins.

Hunter: It is now 7:30 PM Eastern Time and the polls have closed in three more states: North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia. Get ready for some projections!

-CNN Projection-

NORTH CAROLINA                                                        WEST VIRGINIA
President                                                                                   President
16 Electoral votes                                                                  5 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                  WINNER
ALLEN MITCHELL                                                     MIGUEL SANCHEZ

We can project that Allen Mitchell will carry the state of North Carolina and its 16 Electoral votes. We can also project that Mr. Sanchez will carry West Virginia and its 5 Electoral votes. Both these states weren't considered competitive. However, we cannot, surprisingly, make a projection in Ohio at this point. But we have conducted an exit poll in Ohio and we would like to share those results with you. Keep in mind: These are exit poll results and estimates, they may not necessarily reflect the outcome of the race:

OHIO
EXIT POLL
President

Sanchez (R) - 53%
Mitchell (D) - 44%

In Ohio, Miguel Sanchez is ahead of Allen Mitchell by 9 points, 53% to 44%. Not a close race in the Buckeye state, but we won't call a state unless our exit poll shows a candidate ahead by at least 10 points.

Taking a look at our electoral map, this is where the race stands:

Mitchell (D) - 48 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 5 EVs

Undecided - 48 EVs

Hunter: Right now, Vice President Allen Mitchell has 48 Electoral votes, while Republican Miguel Sanchez has 5 Electoral votes. States with a total of 48 Electoral votes are still too early or too close to call.

Very nice! I have a question - are any Congressmen serving now still in office in 2044?

Any current Senators still serving?
Also, was the House of Representatives expanded in size if there's 555 EV's?

Philip Hunter, CNN news anchor: Let's go to Chrisopher Lee, who is following the Senate races for us. You can make some projections, right?

Lee: Yes, Philip. We can make two projections at this point.

NORTH CAROLINA                                                    WEST VIRGINIA
Senator                                                                                   Senator

WINNER                                                                               WINNER
MAX EVANS                                                               KENNETH WRIGHT

In North Carolina, we project that the incumbent Democrat Max Evans will be reelected to a third term. In West Virginia, two-term Senator Kenneth Wright will be reelected easily. Really no surprises here, neither in North Carolina, nor in West Virginia.

Taking a look at the Senate map, this is where the race for control of the US Senate stands right now:

So far, there will be at least 35 Republicans in the next United States Senate and at least 37 Democrats. Democrats need to pick up six seats tonight in order to retake the Senate, five if Mr. Mitchell wins. We are still watching that very close Campbell-Morris race in South Carolina. Back to you, Philip.

Hunter: Thank you, Christopher. Joining us now are Patrick Hill, Mr. Sanchez's campaign manager and Douglas Green, Mr. Mitchell's campaign manager. Thank you for joining us. Mr. Hill, what do you make of the night so far?

Hill: Well, I think it's looking good for us. After 12 years of Democratic rule, the American people are ready for a change.
Hunter: So, looking at that electoral map, what's your strategy to get to 278 electoral votes?
Hill: Well, I think it's clear that we need to win some states in the Democrats' base region, the South Atlantic States, by winning South Carolina and most importantly Florida. I don't need to tell you that Florida has been the most important swing state this year. It's very close there, but we think we will ultimately prevail. Besides Florida and South Carolina, we also think we can win Alabama, Lousiana, Illinois, Minnesota and some other swing states like Montana and Oregon.
Hunter: What about Massachusetts? You think you can win that back? President Martinez won that by 7 points in 2040.
Hill: It's definitely in play. We're doing very well in the Boston suburbs and most of the rural areas in the state. Our ground game is strong and we think that our message is really resonating with Bay State voters.
Hunter: You must be a bit concerned about the fact that Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana aren't called yet, right?
Hill: No, not really. We always knew that Mr. Mitchell had some appeal in those states, much more so than President Martinez. Those states might be Republican, but they're not solidly Republican. Kentucky and Indiana have been trending a bit Democratic in the past decade, but again, we think we will win those states in the end. The fact that West Virginia was called for Miguel at poll closing time is pretty good news for us, given how well Democrats have been doing in the Eastern Panhandle in recent years and the appeal that Mr. Mitchell has in some areas of the state.

Hunter: Alright, thank you, Mr. Hill. Mr. Green, you must be feeling pretty confident right now...
Green: Well, I am cautiously optimstic right now. Obviously those early returns are very encouraging, but we always knew that Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina were going to vote solidly for Allen. The Southeast is now a microcosm of the country as a whole and our message is really resonating with voters there.
Hunter: Our exit poll in South Carolina has you up 3 points in that state.
Green: That's really good news for us, yes. I am optimistic.
Hunter: So, if you win South Carolina, what then is your strategy to get to the magic number, 278?
Green: Well, like Mr. Hill said, Florida is the key state in this election. It's going to be close, but we're doing surprisingly well in the state. Rememeber three or four months ago when people were kind of writing us off in Florida? Well, that has definitely changed. We're doing very well in most areas of the state and we will prevail in the end.
Hunter: So, if you win Florida, that's 32 additional electoral votes for you. A big prize, but where do you go next?
Green: Well, we're confident that we can sweep the entire Deep South and the South Atlantic States: We're competitive in Alabama, which President Martinez lost four years ago, Louisiana, which he narrowly won and also South Carolina, which he also won. But we're not just winning in the South, we're also doing surprisingly well in the Midwest. We're competitive in Minnesota, Illinois and even Pennsylvania has tightened significantly, even though we still think that that state should go for Mr. Sanchez in the end.
Hunter: What about the West and the Southwest? Do you think you can carry Oregon, Arizona, Utah and Montana?
Green: Absolutely. Allen can appeal to those voters in a way that President Martinez really couldn't. I think what you're seeing there is that the character issue is really working well for him in the swing states. Voters know that Allen won't just be a third term of Chris Martinez. They know they can trust him and that he will unite this country. They can distinguish between the president and Allen.
Hunter: Alright, what about Texas? This state has emerged as a very important battleground state since Ted Will won in 2032, but it's Mr. Sanchez's home state, he is quite popular there.
Green: Well, the last polls had us down 6-8 points in the state. As you very well know, we don't expect Texas to be won by Allen, but we're still confident that we can win without the state.

Hunter: Alright, thank you both for joining us! We will take a short break and when we come back, a lot of states will have poll closings at 8 PM Eastern Time. Stay tuned!

Philip Hunter, CNN news anchor: Welcome back to CNNs election night coverage of the 2044 election. It is now 8 PM Eastern Time and the polls have closed in 16 more states and the District of Columbia.

-CNN Projection-

TENNESSEE                                                                        OKLAHOMA
President                                                                                  President
12 Electoral votes                                                                 7 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                 WINNER
MIGUEL SANCHEZ                                                  MIGUEL SANCHEZ

MAINE                                                                                    NEW HAMPSHIRE
President                                                                                   President
4 Electoral votes                                                                     4 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                    WINNER
MIGUEL SANCHEZ                                                     ALLEN MITCHELL

MARYLAND                                                                         MISSISSIPPI
President                                                                                   President
9 Electoral votes                                                                    7 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                  WINNER
ALLEN MITCHELL                                                     ALLEN MITCHELL

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA                                          RHODE ISLAND
President                                                                                   President
3 Electoral votes                                                                      3 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                  WINNER
ALLEN MITCHELL                                                     ALLEN MITCHELL

DELAWARE
President
3 Electoral votes

WINNER
ALLEN MITCHELL

We can project that Miguel Sanchez, the Republican, will carry Tennessee and its 12 electoral votes, Oklahoma and its 7 electoral votes and Maine and its 4 electoral votes. Allen Mitchell will carry New Hampshire, the most Democratic state in New England, and its 4 electoral votes, Maryland and its 9 electoral votes - a big win for Mr. Allen there -, Mississippi - his home state, and its 7 electoral votes, and the District of Columbia, Rhode Island and Delaware with 3 electoral votes each. All of these states were expected to go that way, although earlier in the campaign, the Sanchez campaign had hoped to contest Maryland.

We cannot make any projection in the key battleground states of Florida, Alabama, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Illinois right now. We also don't have enough information to project a winner in Pennsylvania, Missouri and New Jersey right now.

Taking a look at our electoral map, this is where the race stands:

Mitchell (D) - 77 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 28 EVs

Undecided - 163 EVs

Hunter: Right now, Vice President Allen Mitchell has 77 Electoral votes, while Governor Miguel Sanchez has 28 Electoral votes. States with a total of 163 Electoral votes are still too early or too close to call.
We have conducted exit polls in all of these states that are too early or too close to call right now and we want to share those results with you.

Mitchell (D) - 47%                                      Mitchell (D) - 48.5%

Hunter: Alright, let's start with some key battleground states. Take a look at this! In Florida, Allen Mitchell is just one point ahead of Miguel Sanchez, 50% to 49%. A very, very close race in a state that both campaigns agree could be pivotal this year. In Illinois, another key battleground state, Mr. Sanchez is ahead of Mr. Mitchell by 3 points - 50% to 47%. In Massachusetts on the other hand, Mr. Mitchell is ahead of Mr. Sanchez by 5 points - 51% to 46%. In Pennsylvania, which the Democrats hoped to be able to put into play, Mr. Sanchez leads Mr. Mitchell by 6 points - 52% to 46%. In Alabama, which was heavily contested by both sides, Mr. Sanchez is ahead by 4 points - 51% to 47%. In Connecticut, another swing state, both candidates are exactly tied - 48.5% for each! Wow, this race couldn't be closer at all!

But we have also conducted exit polls in some of the other states. Let's take a look:

Lee: Yes, Philip. We can make several projections right now.

TENNESSEE                                                                     OKLAHOMA
Senator                                                                                   Senator

WINNER                                                                               WINNER
RAYMOND PETERSON                                       GREG HOWARD

MAINE                                                                                  NEW HAMPSHIRE
Senator                                                                                   Senator

WINNER                                                                               WINNER
PATRICK WATSON                                               STEFANY SHAHEEN

MISSISSIPPI                                                                   RHODE ISLAND
Senator                                                                                   Senator

WINNER                                                                               WINNER
KEITH HAYES                                                           ADAM REYNOLDS

DELAWARE
Senator

WINNER
KATIE MILNES

ILLINOIS                                                                             ALABAMA
Senator                                                                                    Senator

NO PROJECTION                                                          NO PROJECTION

MASSACHUSETTS                                                          NEW JERSEY
Senator                                                                                     Senator

NO PROJECTION                                                            NO PROJECTION

We can project that Raymond Petereson, the incumbent one-term Republican Senator from Tennessee, will be reelected tonight. In Oklahoma, we can project another victory for the Republicans: Greg Howard will win reelection to a second term. And in Maine, Patrick Watson, who was elected to the Senate six years ago to replace the retiring Senator Bruce Poliquin, he will also be reelected easily tonight in the most Republican state in New England.

In New Hampshire, a race that has drawn national attention, we project that the incumbent Democratic Senator Stefany Shaheen will be reelected easily, defeating State Senator Jonas Ernst. She's a very controversial Senator who once claimed that it's white women who are making this country great and that men shouldn't be allowed to vote, although she later backtracked a bit on those remarks. You'll recall Vice President Allen Mitchell joining other prominent Democrats' calls for her to retire, but she chose to run for reelection. And apparently, the voters of New Hampshire didn't care much about her controversial statements and have reelected her tonight. In Mississippi, Keith Hayes will be reelected, he's a a very popular moderate Democrat. And finally, Adam Reynolds in Rhode Island and Katie Milnes in Delaware will also win reelection. All of these races were expected to go that way, Republicans had hoped to put NH in play because Shaheen is such a controversial feminist Senator, but according to our exit poll, she won 76% of the female vote in the state, which was more than enough to counter her weak showing among men - she won just 36% of male voters in this reliably Democratic state.

We cannot make a projection in Illinois, Alabama, Massachusetts and New Jersey right now. In all four states, Republican incumbents are in a tough race with their Democratic opponents.

Taking a look at the Senate map, this is where the race for control of the US Senate stands right now:

So far, there will be at least 38 Republicans in the next United States Senate and at least 41 Democrats. Democrats need to pick up six seats tonight in order to retake the Senate, five if Mr. Mitchell wins. Back to you, Philip.

Hahaha good one. Love the New Hampshire comments. Is 86 year old Climbing Maggie still the Class 3 Senator? If not, then who replaced her, another female Democrat LOL. And is Jonas Ernst related to Joni?

Hunter: Alright, CNN can now make a projection in another state.

-CNN Projection-

KENTUCKY (39% in)
President
8 Electoral votes

Sanchez (R) - 51%
Mitchell (D) - 45%

CNN can project that the state of Kentucky will be won by Republican Miguel Sanchez. No surprise here, Kentucky is a Republican state, although the polls had shown Miguel Sanchez with just a high single-digit lead in the state.

Taking a look at the electoral map, this is where the race for presidency stands right now:

Mitchell (D) - 77 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 36 EVs

Undecided - 155 EVs

Right now, Miguel Sanchez, the Republican, has 36 Electoral votes, and Allen Mitchell, the Democrat, has 77 Electoral votes. We will be back after a short break, stay tuned!

Oh, I also forgot to ask, is Sen. Keith Hayes (D-MS) black or white?

White.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hunter: Alright, we've got some real numbers coming in from the states where the polls are already closed.

FLORIDA (29% in)                                             SOUTH CAROLINA (25% in)
President                                                              President
32 Electoral votes                                             10 Electoral votes

Sanchez (R) - 48%                              Sanchez (R) - 47%
Mitchell (D) - 51%
                             Mitchell (D) - 51%

INDIANA (41% in)                                             VERMONT (8% in)
President                                                              President
11 Electoral votes                                             3 Electoral votes

Sanchez (R) - 53%                              Sanchez (R) - 48%
Mitchell (D) - 44%
                             Mitchell (D) - 45%

In Florida, probably the biggest battleground state this year, with 29% of the vote in and counted, Mr. Mitchell is ahead of Mr. Sanchez by 3 points, 51% to 48%. In South Carolina, another very important battleground state, Mr. Mitchell is ahead of Mr. Sanchez by 4 points - 51% to 47%. In Indiana, Governor Miguel Sanchez leads Vice President Mitchell by 9 points, 53% to 44%. And finally in Vermont, just 8% of the vote is in and counted, and Mr. Sanchez leads Mr. Mitchell by 3 points, 48% to 45%! But remember, it's still very early in all of these states.

Hunter: Alright, stand by for another CNN projection!

-CNN Projection-

INDIANA (42% in)
President
11 Electoral votes

Sanchez (R) - 53%
Mitchell (D) - 44%

CNN can now project that Indiana and its 11 Electoral votes will be won by Republican Miguel Sanchez. This is really not much of a surprise, even though the state is fairly competitive at the statewide level and unlike other states in the Midwest has not trended Republican at all.

Taking a look at the electoral map, this is where the race for the presidency stands right now:

Mitchell (D) - 77 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 47 EVs

Undecided - 144 EVs

Right now, Vice President Allen Mitchell, the Democrat, has 77 Electoral votes, and Miguel Sanchez, the Republican governor from Texas, has 47 Electoral votes. States with a total of 144 Electoral votes are still undecided. We will take a short break. When we come back, the polls will close in the state of Arkansas. Stay tuned!

Hunter: It is now 8:30 PM Eastern Time and the polls have just closed in the state of Arkansas. Get ready for a CNN projection!

-CNN Projection-

ARKANSAS                                                                         OHIO
President                                                                                  President
6 Electoral votes                                                                   16 Electoral votes

WINNER                                                                                 WINNER
MIGUEL SANCHEZ                                                  MIGUEL SANCHEZ

Alright, CNN can make two projections at this point. We can project that the winner in Arkansas will be Mr. Sanchez. Really no surprise here. Also, in the state of Ohio, where polls had closed an hour ago, we can project based on exit polling data and raw numbers coming in that Miguel Sanchez will win the state and its 16 electoral votes. Both these states had been expected to go that way.

Taking a look at the electoral map, this is where the race for the presidency stands right now:

Mitchell (D) - 77 EVs
Sanchez (R) - 69 EVs

Undecided - 128 EVs

Right now, Mr. Mitchell has 77 Electoral votes, but Mr. Sanchez has closed the gap and now has 69 Electoral votes. States with a total of 128 Electoral votes are still undecided.

Alright, let's go to Chrisopher Lee, who is following the Senate races for us.

Lee: CNN can make one projection right now in the state of Arkansas.

ARKANSAS
Senator

WINNER
TOM COTTON

We project that the incumbent Senator, Republican Tom Cotton, will be reelected easily to serve a sixth term in the United States Senate.

Taking a look at the Senate map, this is where the race for control of the US Senate stands right now:

So far, there will be at least 39 Republicans in the next United States Senate and at least 41 Democrats. Democrats need to pick up six seats tonight in order to retake the Senate, five if Mr. Mitchell wins. Back to you, Philip.

Both weird & fascinating to revisit this 4 1/2 years later. Anyone interested in a (more detailed) continuation? Will have to change a few things first, but oh well...

Sure!

I would like the know the long-term damages/reasons that resulted in 16 years of R governance, though.

What I am seeing here is states that were solidly GOP in the 2020s are now leaning GOP, and solidly Democratic states are now leaning Democratic.

What caused the Republicans to make inroads in New England, especially Vermont?!?
