In the last ten years, there were many sport events in developing countries. The 2008 Olympics took place in Beijing, the 2010 Soccer World Cup took place in South Africa, the 2012 Euro took place in Poland and Ukraine, the 2014 Winter Olympics took place in Sochi, the 2014 Soccer World Cup took place in Brazil, the 2016 Olympics took place in Rio de Janeiro. The 2018 Soccer World Cup will take place in Russia. The 2022 Soccer World Cup will take place in Qatar.
Pros: events make people happy, events create incentive to improve the infra-structure and the public transportation of the cities
Cons: the risk of corruption is very high, the risk of crime is very high, the need to avoid crime during the events is dangerous for the civil liberties, the priorities for the investment in infra-structure and public transportation are distorted: the investment take place in the areas between the airports, the hotels and the venues, which are usually the richest neighbohoods, which are areas where the infra-structure is already not bad, while other parts of the cities are forgotten.

Honestly, all "big sports events" should cease until the mafias that run them (FIFA and the IOC at the very least) are disbanded (and their leaders jailed) and replaced by nonprofits.
