White House Press Secretary has been my dream job since the Gibbs days.
Would also love to be a campaign manager for a rogue campaign, like McCain 08, where it's just creativity, guerilla tactics, big gambles and knife fighting.

For most of these jobs I'd much rather be some sort of policy undersecretary role than the actual position.

Vice President. Get paid big bucks, don't have to do anything.

Out of the options presented, probably a Supreme Court justice. Lifetime appointment, lots of power, mostly insulated from public pressure.

Out of these: President and then Speaker of the House.

Write in: Governor of California.

I'd love to be President, but I don't really want to do it for 4 years.

Probably SCOTUS or chair of the Fed.  I'm more introverted, so a lot of the others wouldn't work great for me.

I'm absolutely shocked that you, an Atlas member, are introverted.

Secretary of State
U.S. Ambassador to Israel
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.

Another few positions I'd like:

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (State Department)
Director of Policy Planning Staff (A think tank w/i the State Department)
Director of the Foreign Service Institute (also w/i the State Department)

Senator.

On the "viewing it as a job" side:
As a Senator, you're only really responsible for your office staff/budget and your voting record, all things completely in your control. You only have to go through the rigors and intense fundraising of a campaign once every 6 years. No term limits, and good pay and benefits for yourself and family.

Unlike a Congressman, you have more independence and room to take initiative and leave your mark. And you also have much more influence over foreign policy than a Congressman.

But most of all, it's second to only the President and maybe Speaker in terms of influence on policymaking and government investigations, but you're more likely to be there at the table even more long-term than the current President or Speaker. You can definitely make your voice heard as Senator, and can easily get national attention for your views and ideas if that's what you want, again second to probably only the President, presidential candidates, and the Speaker.

The bully pulpit of the President is larger, but like I said, a Senator can still get that kind of attention if he/she wants. There's also much less scrutiny and stress as Senator, compared to President or Speaker, because you're only responsible for your votes and your office, not the country. A good Senator would of course worry about best serving their state and country at all times too, but if you mess up you're only one of 100, you can go on vacation and spend time with family without being forced to respond to events all across the country and over the world.

So yeah, extremely influential (just under the President), but much less of a stressful job.

If that were an option, I would take it. And personally, I think Sacramento's a great place to live.

As for the poll, my first choice was Speaker of the House. I'm a huge fan of Nancy Pelosi and admire her leadership. While I don't like the fundraising part of the job, I would like to have legitimate power and be able to govern. For the record, I'm thinking of the job more in the sense of powerful Speakers like Gingrich and Pelosi who could control their respective caucuses and actually pass legislation, not like Boehner. Ideally, my party would also control the Senate and the White House.

My second choice was Supreme Court Justice, one of nine votes on the highest court in the land. It's a lifetime job and answerable to no one. But more importantly, I actually like constitutional law. I would enjoy having the ability to actually help determine the meaning of the Constitution and how it applies today.
