At best heaps too much praise on bland and generally non contributing posters. Which is minor and not worth complaining much about. But at worse results in praise for quasi-white nationalists and genocide supporting North Korea apologists, so yeah, HR.

Works up to a point, but shouldn't be taken to its extreme.

Also I really don't see how it applies to Santander, who's an asshole irrespective of his political views.

Horribly misguided politics, but I think his heart is in the right place. FF.

I vote FF/HP on a non-political basis. Santander is a nice fella, even if I disagree wit.h him politically.

Did people say he was a "nice guy"?  Wasn't my impression of him for the most part, though he could be once in a while.  Generally I think people liked him because he was interesting.

Yes, I totally agree. I rarely judge anyone as a person solely based on their behavior on the Atlasosphere.  With a few exceptions (i.e. Yates).

I would say its quite a stretch to call someone a HORRIBLE PERSON just because of minor trolling and shenanigans on the Atlasosphere.... and, with some exceptions, their stated political views.

Usually FR.  If someone is a good poster and/or nice guy I'm inclined to vote FF.   Disagreeing with a person's ideology tends not to be a good reason to vote HP, but it depends on the extent.  If a poster is literally a Nazi, then ok, vote HP even if they're personally pleasant.

Many posters vote HP for pretty superficial reasons, though.  Some vote HP just because they don't like a poster's quirky posting style, and that is dumb.  There's a reason why "nice guy" is often a good enough reason to vote FF.

I feel like a 4 point system like

Insightful
Substantive
Not Substantive
Terrible

or

Great Poster
Good Poster
Indifferent
Bad Poster

Would be better than FF/HP.

I know its controversial, but I would not call someone a "HORRIBLE PERSON!!!!!!" just because they are annoying on an internet forum.

I think there's something to be said for saying that posters are FFs even if you disagree with them politically. There are definitely posters on this forum who are good people, and state their case in a reasonable manner. The fact that I disagree with many of their views doesn't make them a bad person, in my eyes. On the flip side, there are also posters who I agree with a fair amount of the time, but who are enormous tools. IMO, the FF/HP rating should be at least mostly independent of whether or not you agree with their views. I'd hate to think some people think of me as a horrible person just because my views are different from theirs.

But don't things like obvious white nationalist sympathies and North Korea apologism go far beyond simply "different views"?

Yeah, there are limits, though I think in the case of someone like Santander, he's just trolling/become a parody of himself.

It's weird you'd bring TNF into this. I mean when we mock " nice guy ff smiley face" it's normally delivered at people praising bland and inoffensive posters who spent most of their posts empty quoting or regurgitating completely motr opinions. Whatever you think of the guy, that doesn't really describe TNF a man who even his supporters will admit was abrasive and prickly.

The Manichean HP versus FF thing is a fail right out of the box. FP, BP and HP, as in Freedom Poster, Beta Poster, and Horrible Poster, would make more sense. Judging folks on the internet as people rather than posters is problematical.

Blame Milk_and_cereal:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=183987.msg3980071#msg3980071

He did the first ever FF/HP thread of an Atlas forum user (Jfern, as it turns out):

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=35216.0

Before that, the FF/HP thing was used in polls about public figures, not fellow forumites.

yes, I realize I've just opened up the floodgates for "opinion, of (insert forum member here", so be it.  Tongue

If only he knew...

Using Greek letters as adjectives in one of the worst memes ever. Let's not spread it further.

Also, from that thread Morden linked to:

Looks like I'm not the only one who ever changed his mind about a poster, right BRTD? Wink
