Because Mark Warner sleepwalked through his re-election bid, and nearly got caught with his pants down, as a result.

I believe "skeletons in the closet" is the common phrase.  I'm not sure what it actually means but everyone seems to use it whenever Warner's brought up.

This. Warner is much lower energy than Kaine.

Mark Warner is an insider's insider. He went to work on Capitol Hill as a young man and then used his knowledge of telecom and utility regulations and his connections to elected officials to make a fortune investing in the then ascendant mobile phone service market.

He would only serve to underscore everything that people dislike about Hillary Clinton - they both live in that uncanny valley where business and government intermingle, where people who are "connected" can have both the security and stability of government jobs and the obscene paychecks of Corporate America.

Warner's star dimmed somewhat after the surprising near loss to Ed Gillespie in 2014.

The whole thing with Phil Puckett, which caused him to nearly lose his reelection to Gillespie, couldn't possibly play well on a national level either.

Kaine's a better pick - Clinton doesn't really need working class whites (which was the crux of Warner's early campaigns) she needs to fight for suburban whites (which Kaine does better with). Plus, Kaine is more reliably liberal than Warner, though Warner has trended to the left over the years.

Warner's appeal to working class whites was always amusing given the amount of wealth he's acquired over the years. Then again, the same goes for Trump (and a litany of other public office-holders).

In addition to what people have mentioned, Kaine's slightly younger and has a background that appeals to minorities (Civil Rights lawyer, missionary in Honduras.) He also spent four years as Lieutenant Governor, and three years as DNC Chairman, so he's used to putting himself second, which is necessary for a Veep.

Because non-Virginians seem to think Kaine and Warner are interchangeable.

1.  Warner's selection would have been more troublesome with the base.  His big business background and promotion of raising the age for Social Security benefits would not have played well.  Kaine's background as a civil rights attorney plays better.

2.  Kaine was the preferred choice of the White House and many party operatives due to his time heading the DNC.

3.. Kaine speaks Spanish, Warner doesn't.

4.  Kaine is a natural No. 2, having served as Lieutenant Governor to Warner himself.  I've read that some think that Warner would chafe as a No. 2.

5.  There are low-grade rumors about Warner's private life during his time working in the private sector in the 1990s.  We don't know if there is any truth to it, but Kaine doesn't seem to have those problems.

6.  The argument that Warner had much stronger political standing in VA collapsed in his very close 2014 reelection.

Well, obviously. That's why he joined the Democratic Party instead.

Sadly, Warner missed his window. The positions he had to take to win in Virginia in 2001 don't have national Democratic appeal anymore.

Kaine, by contrast, was able to capitalize on coming in after Warner, and never had to move farther right than he already was--so he could take liberal positions when he wanted to. That, along with soft factors like age, the fact that he speaks Spanish, etc. put him ahead of Warner.

Well, if he's referring to CPUSA specifically, it's pretty reasonable to talk about it interchangeably with the Democratic Party (although probably a tad bit unfair-I don't think the Democrats have moved quite that far to the right.)
