In 2014, Colbert petitioned Nikki Haley to appoint him as a placeholder replacement for Jim DeMint. She obviously refused, but in a December 2012 poll done by PPP, Colbert was the favorite candidate over Tim Scott by 5%.

Let's say, hypothetically, Colbert quit his job as host of The Late Show and ran against Lindsey Graham in 2020.

How would he fare? (As a former resident of Indiana, I have to say I appreciated Franken pushing Letterman for Senate.)

Probably the same or worse than Vincent Shaheen in 2010. SC is just too conservative. Hell, even his sister lost to Appalachian Trail Mark Sanford in SC-01.

It's my impression that Graham's losing a lot of face in South Carolina, though I understand it's a deeply conservative State. 2020 should be a much better year for Democrats than 2010, and Vincent Shaheen managed 47% of the vote in that year. Also, SC-01 is more Republican than the State.

What is Colbert ran in-character as a Republican? What if it was an open seat?

I know this is tomfoolery, but I'd love to see a scenario where Colbert does in fact win.

Thought this thread was going to be about Colbert running for President in 2020
Clarified, but that'd belong in a different sub-forum.

Stephen Colbert: 48.8%
Andre Bauer: 47.5%

Lindsey Graham is probably going to retire, run for Governor in 2018, or be primaried. I'd bet on the former being the most likely, so I had a Trumpist win a competitive primary. Colbert has very strong charisma, so he'd probably overperform the Democratic nominee by about five points. He'd narrowly win as long as Hillary doesn't lose with under ~175 EVs/the R doesn't win with over ~363-365 EVs.

Same. Colbert is a massive HP. But on a serious note, is he actively considering?

I think of the liberal-icon-comic-pundits, Colbert would easily make the best politician. Out of character he seems like a strong, empathetic communicator. Part of his decision to stop the Report (iirc) was that he realized that he in some ways was harming American political discourse. Let's also not forget that he's actually a rather devout Catholic.

That said, SC is a tough sell.
