Did his views change?  Yeah, so did Strom Thurmond's.  Strangely, only one is thought of even remotely fondly on this forum.

Strom's views didn't change.  His party did.

Was he still pushing for segregation in the '90s?  Because if he wasn't, then his views had likely changed...
In 1993, Thurmond said that the issue was settled.  He said this in comparison to the then-current issue of gays in the military.

Thurmond was in his 90s then; he was a man who had a representative as a segregationist and a secret black daughter that he did make provisions for, but secretly.  I think it's fair to say that a guy in his position might be internally conflicted a bit.

Whatever anyone personally thinks about Robert Byrd, he's hardly relevant to this election, considering, you know, he's DEAD.

Admitting that his side of the argument had lost is not the same as admitting he was on the wrong side of it, which he never openly did (while Byrd did repeatedly).
