Is this a surprise? I thought the consensus was that it was a fad with no more than six weeks staying power, if that.
The consensus was the people who weren't actually fans but played back in the day and the other casual people playing would always desert in that time period. Actual Pokémon fans (which there are many millions) would keep playing.
I guess I picked a bad time to start playing. 
But I almost caught a Gengar!
Plenty of people still playing, aka actual Pokémon fans. The casuals will be on to the next fad.
