Very true. However, for all his faults, Karimov was apparently skilled at politics. If his successor isn't, it could open the door for instability. Especially considering the state of the modern Islamic world.

I'm sure China and Russia will be monitoring the situation very closely.

Missed this during my hurricane related isolation from the world. Isn't his daughter relatively powerful? Or is she just some kleptocratic bimbo and I'm confusing her for some other central Asian dictator's daughter.

She was, but she was removed after trying to take control of buying out the country and put the traditionnal powerbroker on the wayside.

She is residence-assigned since years, but, as we don't hear about her, she might as well be dead.
