Stanford faculty, students or staff must now obtain the approval of a new university committee to conduct drone flights. The university says it uses drones for research in "a wide range of technologies important to infrastructure inspection, agricultural monitoring and various humanitarian applications."

Lots of things potentially.  Searching for people in disasters, delivering supplies to the victims, communications, probably a few others I can't think of right now.
