Just imagine you live where you do now and are from a really integrated and assimilated Muslim family and a woman.

I wouldn't obviously. But of course I would've converted to Christianity anyway...

What kind of a question is that? If you were a Jewish man, would you eat ham? How should I know? I'm not a Jewish man or a Muslim woman.

I'm not a Muslim woman so I can't possibly answer this question. I do, however, love your ability to construct hypotheticals imagining yourself in different situations where somehow nothing about you changes at all.

If I maintained my current values (which isn't that unreasonable since I'm already from an integrated non-Western immigrant family), then I probably wouldn't believe in whatever religion I was brought up in, so probably not.

Well in my case I can answer yes, since one of my core principles is not caring about my "culture" or holding any reverence for my heritage and background.

If the object were to avoid sexual harassment or sexual assault, then it is pointless to wear one.

Also I'll point out that I've seen pictures and videos from shows of my music in Turkey, and no women are wearing hijabs there. So it's safe to assume people with my musical taste don't ever wear it.

Yeah, this is ridiculous even by BRTD standards.

BRtD: yes

Don't be silly, if BRTD was born deaf-mute in 18th-century Dhaka he'd obviously find his way to a Minneapolis studio apartment and a collection of Jawbreaker band shirts, and it would definitely be through the power of Christ

I bet most gay posters would say they'd still be gay regardless of what type of family they were born into.

Yep, probably as a political statement much like what Seyla Benhabib discusses in her writing on laïcité/French secularism.

I honestly can't see how you can compare being gay with a decision whether to wear a hijab or not.

No. I’m a (liberal) muslim myself, but wouldn’t wear one if I were a woman. My wife, who is unlike me third-generation immigrant with Egyptian ancestors, does not wear one (like all her muslim relatives in America). This was never really question for us, because we both don’t like it. But I accept those who wear it voluntarily.
