The sorts of people forming "communities" and wanting legitimization of ridiculous things never ceases to amaze me. There are people who call themselves "Polyamorous" and insist that it's part of their sexual orientation to be having sex with multiple people at the same time.

I personally think they're just trying to rename commitment issues and sleeping around, but if one can find a partner who's willing to risk getting an STD because his or her partner won't stop banging other people, then good for them. But if you ask me out and say you're "polyamorous," I'm going to tell you to get a therapist.

My opinion of them is not high, but I knew some people who behaved/self-described this way in undergrad and they weren't 'degenerate' so much as they'd just been sold an ideological bill of goods that made life superficially easier for them and hadn't (yet) encountered any solid reasons to question it, so I'm not going to emptyquote Santander or the first word of SMilo's post.

First off, since when are humans inherently monogamous? We certainly didn't evolve that way and we certainly aren't entirely that way now. Monogamy is a social construct and it seems unfair to look down at people who want to deviate from this social norm when all of us deviate to some degree from other social/cultural positions. How is this any different?

Second, you're projecting your views on relationships onto other people, which coincidentally is what people did with gay people for basically ever - said marriage between two gay people was wrong! degenerate! Yet, here some of us are doing the same to other people who are different. Tying into my first point, how is me wanting to marry a woman any different than someone wanting to have 2 or more gf/bfs? Both are deviations from mainstream social practices that in most respects have no effect on anyone else.

As for your original point, that is so broad that there are certainly situations where such an attitude can be harmful, but in this case, it is not. It only becomes an issue when you insist on concerning yourself with their personal relationships.

In this case, such a relationship isn't anyone's business nor is it hurting anyone else.

Let's stop attempting to construct some sort of moral framework around hedonism. To whomever may be in one of these "communities": we get it, you wanna have sex with a lotta people. College was fun*. Cool. And, if I'm going to be serious, trying to normalize this stuff will probably have more negative consequences than positive. But it's not even about that: sanctimonious whining about some sort of discrimination against polyamorous people or something is annoying. And, guess what, if that being "deviant" is going to prevent some (literal) wanderlust from having "personal satisfaction", guess what: human happiness--and the individual itself--is an invented phenomenon; our primary goal should be that society do what it does best: function well, not become ossified and brought to a standstill by "fashionable" interests.

Obviously, deviance does not "destroy" society; its occurrence and our subsequent condemnation of it allows us to draw lines by which others may live. Read your Durkheim.
