Who do you think will be the Republican nominee in 2020 if Hillary Clinton defeats Donald Trump in November?

A better question would be, who will be the candidates running in 2020? A Donald Trump defeat will lead to a more conservative candidate running in 2020.

My top picks:

1. Rand Paul
2. Ted Cruz
3. Justin Amash
4. Marco Rubio
5. Cory Gardner

Shouldn't Paul Ryan be on this list?

I think Pence, Cruz, Rubio (if he wins re-election), and Ryan are in the top tier, and I would probably bet on one of them over everyone else combined. Cotton, Ernst, and Haley are positioned particularly well to move up the list in the next couple of years. I think Walker and Paul are unlikely to win after doing so poorly in the 2016 primaries, but I won't completely count them out. Perry and Christie are both has-beens, and Rick Scott is a "never-was." I think Kasich, Sasse, Amash, and Baker are (from an ideological perspective) poorly positioned to win GOP primaries. Corker is a competent politician but I don't see what separates him as a presidential contender. I doubt Ayotte wins re-election, but if she does, I think she'll have a hard time pivoting to a Republican primary. I can see the logic behind Abbot and Rauner, but I'm not sure how well either would do on the national stage.

Cruz is probably the front runner though. Ryan is far too moderate like Eric Canter on immigration issues.

I reluctantly voted Rubio, assuming he wins reelection. But Cruz probably has about as good of a chance.

My guess is that without Trump, it'll play out more like a conventional GOP primary with Rubio as the establishment standard bearer with the conservative activists throwing their lot in with Cruz who I think will ultimately be vindicated by a Trump defeat.

I think the next four years as Speaker are going to damage Ryan too much to be a viable candidate. And I can't really see Pence making it that far.  Cotton strikes me as all hype and Kasich is out of place ideologically.

I could maybe see Walker getting another look if he bones up on policy, but that seems unlikely. Sasse may have the potential to break out but I'm not sure if he's ready for primetime.

Yes. Hopefully if Trump loses the "he wasn't conservative enough" narrative doesn't become the dominant thinking in our party.

If we can pick candidates who have a 0% chance of winning in a primary, I'd nominate Hillary Clinton as the GOP nominee.

As we have seen in Atlas' past attempts on predicting past elections, probably someone not even on this list.

Just like Mitt Romney's defeat led to a very Strong Conservative candidate this year?

I don't think Cruz was the favorite even before the 2016 Republican Presidential Primaries to win the nomination. I think Jeb Bush and Walker were the favorites to take the nomination before the 2016 Republican Presidential Primaries started.

Mike Pence would be the 2020 version of Scott Walker or Tim Pawlenty. I am 100% sure that he will not win a single state, and I'd be surprised if he even makes it to Iowa.
I think Pence should have run for President in 2012 because I think that was "his time" to run for the Presidency. However, I think his time to run for President has passed him by very quickly.
