If Mitt Romney chose to run for Senator in Michigan, his birthplace where the Romney family has great connections, instead of Massachusetts in 1994 could he have been elected Senator?

I doubt Abraham would've let him run - and if he did, the primary would've been very tough.

Abraham would have needed Dan Quayle and his other allies out in full force. Ronna Romney almost beat Abraham in that primary. I'm wondering if Romney would retire in 2006 or run for Governor in 2002/2006, especially if Granholm ran for Senate in 2006.

Considering Abraham only beat a much weaker Romney 52-48 in the 1994 primary, I'm inclined to say yes, definitely. Unless he tries to run for President in 2000 (not impossible; depends on how much of an overwhelming favorite Bush is in this universe), he probably manages a narrow 2000 reelection, retires in 2006, and then runs for President in 2008 roughly as in real-life.

I think he would have won since there was no Kennedy running for office in Michigan.
