Let's say Obama was white, would the GOP still be putting forth so much opposition to him as they are now?

Much less harsh, it would've been a great era of bipartisanship and prosperity

What is his background, is he still portrayed as an out of touch, coastal liberal foreign politician.

Less harsh, but still quite strong.

If he was white, Hillary Clinton would be President.

Mostly just as harsh.

If he was white, Hillary Clinton would be President.
He'd probably just be a Representative. Jesse Jackson, Jr., would either have ran and won, or Dan Hynes or Gery Chico would be a Senator now.

If he was white, Hillary Clinton would be President.

For four years, but she would have done something stupid/corrupt, and Mitt would have been elected in 2012.

If Obama was White his entire political history would be different, that White Obama would be political unrecognisable even if he has the exact same views as he has as a Black Obama.

But let's say that White Obama exist, after having seen how Bill Clinton was treated by a less insane GOP in the 90ties, are anybody really so big idiots or political hacks, that they think the GOP would treat Obama nicer. Maybe we wouldn't see Birthism, but instead they would claim that Obama was Manchurian candidate or that every who had died in Chicago the last 50 years had been personal murdered by him or some other weird sh**t. The only colours the Republicans truly care about are not Black and White but Red and Blue.

Less harsh. The complete obstructionism really started with the birther movement.

With the Bush campaign of 2004 in mind, I'll say about the same.

Mostly the same, though without the dog-whistle component. Let's face it, the right-wing propaganda machine would demonize any President with a D next to his name.

Probably just as harsh. Current political polarization produces a political climate of relentless antagonism and brinksmanship. There is no such thing as gentleman politics anymore, political constituencies respond much more readily to fear and vitriol as this election has highlighted.

It would have been even harsher, because nobody would have to worry about holding back and being deemed "racist" which is what happens now.

About the same. If it were less harsh, there's little chance that the difference would actually be meaningful.

I think it would be slightly less harsh, because lets face it: this wasn't simple policy obstruction but Republicans called into question if Obama even qualified as an American, even going so far to question his religion on the same basis. This goes far beyond normal partisan politics any way you look at it.

Racism is made up of southern Democrats like Robert Byrd.  If Obama was a Republican the dinosaur media would remind us every 5 minutes that he's only half-black technically.

If Obama was white, he would never become President in 2008. While his candidacy attracted a lot of racist backlash, him being an African American was also an important part of his appeal.

And yes, any Democratic President would've been receiving the same mount of crap from the GOP.

Yeah... Consider how important the South was to him in the primaries. For some reason I don't think that John EwardsEdwards would have done that much better without him...

Yes. I know most posters don't remember the Clinton years (or even the Bush years in some cases), but bitter rhetoric about an opposite party president has been a tradition for quite sometime now.

Barry O'Bama (D-IL) is probably just some sleazy Irish corporate lawyer in the downtown area who voted for Rahm.

Get ready for 4 years of Hillary Clinton being called a Muslim. I have already come across it.

Somewhat less harsh, though he still would've faced a decent amount of opposition. Doubt the Tea Party would have ever existed, though.
