As to the question, if Obama was white I think it would have been much worse, as people attack him for changing his race just so he could become the first black president.

If Obama was white, he would never have won the primaries.

But, to those who think there is racism, do you think it is because he is black or because he has a Muslim-sounding name?  In other words, do you think a liberal African-American Democrat named John Smith would be viewed any differently?

I think it would be slightly less harsh, because lets face it: this wasn't simple policy obstruction but Republicans called into question if Obama even qualified as an American, even going so far to question his religion on the same basis. This goes far beyond normal partisan politics any way you look at it.

Republican treatment of Obama is indisputably worse than that of Clinton, especially when you consider that Clinton at least often had the appearance of impropriety about him in his actions, whereas Obama has indisputably been a decent man, faithful to his wife and a good father.

Unfortunately there's no way to know if the fact that the media landscape in 2009-2017 is very different from that of 1993-2001 wasn't driving most of that "excess rage."
