Interested in seeing the results. In backing a candidate as odious, ungrateful, and disrespectful as Trump, the Right has totally squandered whatever credibility it had on this issue.

I never quite understood how criticizing the government from a leftist perspective was automatically a disrespect to veterans/active duty soldiers.

Then again, the right wing can criticize the government all they want because muh america, muh first amendment, muh "support the troops" car magnet.

Outright insulting war heroes. > Sitting during a pledge that needs to be revised anyway (or a national anthem that should be changed).

I never quite understood how criticizing the government from a leftist perspective was automatically a disrespect to veterans/active duty soldiers.

If according to the exit polls and analysts, Republicans had to do better in reaching out to minorities in 2008 and 2012, then if Clinton loses and Trump proves popular, it could be that Democrats have to do better reaching out to veterans and the armed services.  They are like 10% of the electorate and Ds lose them by like 30 points, right? Getting that down to 15 could of been enough to save Gore and maybe Kerry. Though I imagine it would take pushing to the center on Foreign Policy (which if Trump proves an isolationist or incompetent could happen) and that not only does the frontier of our influence destabilizes (as it did for Obama, but it arguably expanded as well), but also shrinks under Trump.  The problem with this strategy is that the police have a lot of veterans and are basically the para-military and they have problems with other people.

Basically Defense/Military has the same problem that Research/Academia arguably does. It is a societal necessity that has come to only serve between 47% and 53% of society at any given time. True, critical thinking and hierarchical thinking are important traits to these jobs but they were times in the past where roles were more balanced.

Insults aren't disrespectful? 'Cause I still have a few in store for you if you truly don't mind them. Wink

Donald Trump and ISIS have disrespected our troops too many times to be taken seriously.  We know crocodile tears when we see them.

Remember the old saying: "veterans get booed at Mike Pence rallies."  That certainly applies here.

Why does the pledge/anthem need revised?

Why does the pledge/anthem need revised?

The pledge has sectarian overtones though they were made for the good intention of emphadizing that you can believe in God in America when it was at least discouraged in the Soviet Union.

The Star Spangled banner is more than 200 years old.

Both suck, I'm not going to award one the "prestige" of being "less bad."

As long as we're going to embrace antiquated idiocies like democratic republicanism, surely the Almighty isn't the first thing we should be dumping from the Pledge!?

The Star Spangled banner is more than 200 years old.

A better argument is that among the not-commonly-sung verses is one specifically celebrating the death of escaped slaves who fought for Britain because they'd been promised their freedom.

Eh, not really since as noted most people don't even know that verse exists and is completely forgotten. God Save The Queen has a line about "putting down the treacherous Scots" but no one knows that line exists either.

It's still a better argument than the idea that it should be changed or replaced simply because it is old, as if it were a car or a pair of shoes.

It's not.  People just like to use veterans to score political points.

Meh I'd like for it to be replaced not so much for being "old" but I'd prefer the national anthem be a song I actually like, so I'd prefer some melodic hardcore song. This would be a good candidate actually, the lyrics are very America: https://youtu.be/IklWw4NZrd4
