In 2012, Mitt Romney was able to beat Obama by 48 points. Obama won re-election anyway.

I would say it is because Romney was able to crush everyone in the primary in 2012 and even 2008. In the 2016 primary however, Trump finished third, behind Kasich.

A brass, irreligious new york city populist is not going to do well in a state that is essentially one giant waukesha county.

Utah is an unusually civilized place. They are ranked one of the happiest and least obese states in the nation. Those privileged bastards, eh?

- Trump is not a Mormon. This matters in Utah. Romney, a mormon, got 73% of the vote despite losing nationally - 11% more than John McCain got, and even a bit more than Bush got in '04 when he was winning nationally. Bush and McCain are not Mormon.

- Trump is unpopular everywhere

- Johnson and McMullin are headquartered there.

Many Mormon voters are repelled by Trump's bigoted stance on immigrants because many devout mormons go on two year missions to different areas of the world and they find his rhetoric not only hateful, but pretty damn stupid.

Mormons also have a strong cultural recollection of being a persecuted religion, and don't appear particularly keen on resurrecting that particular set of culture memes.
