With thanks to the search function...

First mention of Donald Trump:

there was a movement that wanted him to run in 2000 but he did not want too

"A Time for Principle"

By John B. Anderson

Knight-Ridder/Tribune News Service, November 19, 1999.

---(SNIP)---

Neither of the leading contenders for the Reform Party nomination, commentator Pat Buchanan and businessman Donald Trump, seem well-prepared to offer the optimistic, forward-looking message that is so important to building a lasting third party movement in America.

---(SNIP)---

The above is obviously a excerpt from elsewhere, so some might count this as the first instead:

I would point out that rich individuals only pay what they choose to in taxes, and use tax shelters for everything else.  Donald Trump is pro-tax and thus pays tax on all $100000000 some he makes a year.  Bill Gates on the other hand is moderately anti-tax and therefore only pays tax on $500000, .05% of what Trump pays tax on even though Gates makes the same if not more than Trump.  Also, corporations only pay tax on profit so excess funds being directed at investment and R&D is encouraged.  You're right about he social issues though.

First mention of Hillary Clinton:

I remember that Hillary Clinton introduced legislation to choose the President by popular vote instead of the Electoral College. (I wonder why?) Of course this idea went no where, but I'm wondering if any groups are still pushing this idea.  IMHO it's impossible to change, except for the way that electors are apportioned (such as ME and NE)
Is railing against the Electoral College strictly an academic exercise?

First mention of Bernie Sanders:

Just attempted to search for something on there and it took the best part of an eternity. If this forum feels very 2002 in its design then the old one feels very 1992.

Here's the link for those who may be interested.

Appears there were no international boards in those days so any thread about non-US politics had to be posted on 'General Politics'. Also activity was much, much lighter so it's easier to just scroll through to find 'firsts', or at least the following kind:

First ever thread: http://www.uselectionatlas.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/leip/ikonboard//topic.cgi?forum=1&topic=1

First ever 'what-if' thread: http://www.uselectionatlas.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/leip/ikonboard//topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=8

(Possibly the) first ever thread about precinct-level maps...but note the date that it was posted http://www.uselectionatlas.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/leip/ikonboard//topic.cgi?forum=9&topic=11

Moving to this wonderful land - First mention of Jeremy Corbyn was in a 2005 seat-by-seat prediction thread:

Islington North  (Jeremy Corbyn): LAB Hold

Funnily enough he ended up with a big swing against him (to the LDs) in that election, no doubt due to his staunch support of the Iraq War. Smiley

And Theresa May (now this is good (or depressing) to read in the current context):

Letwin has ended up as the biggest failure of those four. He was probably seen as the brightest prospect of the bunch at that time.

No, it was even better than that: (EDIT: no, this was the second...but should have been the first just because...)

The GOP could get their favored opponent in IL--

WEEK-TV-Pantagraph poll shows a shift in the front runner position to become the Democratic candidate for Illinois Senate and some weaknesses for President Bush in the state.

The Research 2000 Illinois Poll was conducted from March 1 through March 3, 2004 with a total of 800 likely voters who vote regularly in state elections. The margin for error is 5% for both primary samples.

After a week of battling questions about a domestic violence charge in his past former frontrunner Blair Hull is now third in the race to represent his party for Peter Fitzgerald's position. Barack Obama has 22% of the responses, compared to 20% for Dan Hynes. Hull comes in next with 15% of the vote, one percent ahead of Maria Pappas. 23% of the deomcratic primary voters are undecided in the poll.

On the republican side, Jack Ryan leads with more than double the vote of the next closest candidate, Jim Oberweis. Ryan has the support of 38% of those polled compared to 15% for Oberweis and 10% for McKenna. 26% of the republican voters are still undecided.

In the Presidential race, those who responded to the poll said if the election was held today, 54% would vote for John Kerry compared to 36% for George W. Bush and one percent for Ralph Nader.

Barak also won the endorsements of the Tribune and Sun-Times. He's no DLCer. There will be clear ideological differences.

The actual first:

Then there was this gem:

I have heard good things about Obama Baraka, but I know relatively little about him other than that he is running for Senator from Illinois.  He is half white and half African (as opposed to African-American), so he doesn't quite fit the "minority" mold, but I guess he would pass under the "one drop" rule that many people have unfortunately adopted from the old southern bigots.
