Failed policy that has helped next to no one. I think we should.

Obviously, but we certainly shouldn't replace it with a "Yay, drugs are AWESOME!!!" policy.

Yes, and start a war on drug dealers. Drug users should go to rehab.

YES.

We should also end the war on poverty, the war on obesity, the war on whatever problem-du-jure inspires the use of the phrase of "war on ..."

War is hell, and our use of the word war for things other than actual wars desensitizes us and makes us fatter and more stupid and more insensitive to the fact that wars lead to rape, poverty, starvation, murder, and generally a very bad scene.  The "war on drugs" was a stupid idea for many, many reasons, not the least of which is that it encouraged the use of war in a way that makes us forget that real wars do exist and that we should never forget to avoid wars.  Goddammit I hate the use of the word "war" in this tawdry and hackneyed way.  It needs to stop.  And yes, the "war on drugs" needs to stop as well.  Our prisons are full of nonviolent offenders whose only crime was attempting to escape reality for a while.  Who can blame them?

Oh come on. Surely you're familiar with the kind of discourse that's popular these days among the most hip and kewl sections of the left.

On soft drugs, yes. Regulate the sale in certified stores and collect taxes. Tough drugs like Crystal Meth should continue to be illegal as they pose great health treats.

I'm with Tony on this one. It's not a majority or even a plurality, but there is a decent sized pro-drug contingent on the forum, and it's not just the libertarians.

Yes, it's a lost battle. Definitely legalize cannabis, regulate and tax it so it's safer and brings in extra revenue. As for harder drugs, I'm rather split, perhaps a neutral policy, not allowing them to be sold by retailers but not making them illegal either is the better way to go. And with the extra revenue through the taxation of cannabis, rehab can be better funded.

But amongst anyone relevant?

And of course it seems that you don't even want marijuana sold in stores and consider that to be "Yay, drugs are AWESOME!!!"

I'm not seeing it.  Name names!  Are even the libertarians pro-drugs?  Being against something being illegal doesn't mean you necessarily want to have people doing it.  Do pro-choice people want more abortions?  Sure, maybe a couple of weirdos, but for the other 98% of them?  You shouldn't go to jail for doing meth, but nobody should do meth.  You shouldn't go to jail for heroin, but very few people should do heroin.  I do think more people should be smoking pot, snorting coke and trippin balls though Wink

If used responsibly and in moderation, certain illegal drugs are awesome and greatly enhance life. How is that even a remotely controversial opinion??

Nope, change the focus to crash down harder on the wealthier neighborhoods and actual dealers.

Completely end it and decriminalize drugs and treat drug addiction as an illness, with mandatory hospital time the same way somebody who is mentally ill would be, rather than prison time that will adversely affect them later even if no violent offense was committed in the process.
