That's quite an impressive leap.  Interestingly, the only area where real income dropped was outside of metropolitan areas.

Still too little too late, tbh. Not that it's Obama's fault.

I would wager that's largely because of commodity price collapse, If you are just talking year on year.

Apologies for the sucky image. Once you open the image on the NYT page in a new tab, the axes disappear.

Anyway, the top chart is real median household income, and the bottom chart is the poverty rate. In the top chart, on the right, there appears to be a an adjustment or bump to household income represented by a dotted line. Does anyone know what that is?

In 2014 the Census changed its questions due to the Affordable Care Act. Data for 2013 shows results from both the old and new questions. The new questions resulted in an increase of 3.2% for the median income and 3.5% for the mean income.

These are the Census footnotes associated with the two values for 2013 median income.

You're incorrect (though you're hardly the only one):

Actually, Income in Rural America Is Growing, Too

^ Interesting!  I knew of the narrowness of the Census definition of "rural" but didn't think about that before posting.  Thanks for sharing that!
