in this thread: white people

When a rich black guy can talk about how he envies the privilege of white homeless people, something truly absurd is happening.

Absurdly, being rich is not sufficient to defend black people from police harassment!

I'm substantially in agreement with you on this issue in general, but, you know, nor is being white sufficient to defend homeless people from it.

Anyone who actually thinks that white privilege exists is literally stupid.

I know the term "white privilege" has a lot of baggage, but I am still really surprised that nobody so far has given even a nominal defense of the assertion, for which there is a mountain of sociological evidence, that blacks encounter a series of structural barriers that affect them far more than whites.  I don't really want to dump every piece of data that supports this claim in one post, so for now, I'll just point to the study (rather, a summary of it) that shows that race was a greater factor than criminal record in determining employment interview callback rates.  Seriously, in the year 2003, it was more likely that an employer would call back a white person with a criminal record than a black person without one.  Isn't that shocking?

Indeed, there are tons of factors in play. There are various reasons why someone would be harassed by the police. Conversely, there are various other ways in which people encounter difficulties. Oftentimes, X privilege is a red herring.

The concept of intersectionality was developed to discuss exactly this sort of issue, but, of course, that's not how most pop critical race theorists use it.

I've always taken a strong stance against white privilege.  When I look at Chelsea Clinton, I see someone with a high paying job with no qualifications other than her last name.  Then there's her mother who got a pass on treason because of her high status within the ruling class regarding her e-mails that she allowed to go unprotected.  Of course we all know of the Kennedies and their privilege.  Ted Kennedy's opportunities should make those of us in the equal rights movement sick.  We can't forget Matt Damon championing public schools and criticizing Republicans over their stances on education and then throwing a hissy fit like a seven year old girl when his kids aren't accepted by an elite private school.  Jay Rockefeller and Diane Feinstein seem to have done well just by having their last names.  What can the common man do to make things better in America for those of us who don't come from white privilege? Or when Democrats talk about "white privilege" do they really mean something else?

In which a Republican discovers intersectionality.

The reason why there's so much baggage with the term is that its mention almost immediately elicits notions or expectations of collective guilt and that tends to completely distort how the root issues are conceived.  This doesn't mean these problems shouldn't be discussed or overshadowed by economic concerns, but by framing them this specific way the desired 'ends' to the cause are lost.

Disregarding the misfortunes of a white person is no more justified than celebrating or tolerating the mistreatment of minorities.  That's not integration, that's tribalism.  It's an ugly vice that hasn't uplifted a single person regardless of race.

I will say, however, that two areas where there is real "white privilege" is in areas of school discipline and criminal sentencings.  Recent exposes of the Nixon years reveal his racial intentions in instituting the War on Drugs.  Reforms are long overdue in many aspects of criminal sentencing and criminal enforcement.

Don't recall race relations being this bad during the Bush era.

The development of a sort of intersectional pecking order has struck me as amusing. Such a development is to be expected in terms of how people interact, yet it's bizarre and counterproductive in terms of what social justice endeavors to be.

Yeah, it seems that things have gotten a lot worse in the last few years. The quality of discourse has also continued to degrade, amazing that such a thing could be possible.

This is what happens when you elect someone who only represents 13-14% of the population.

Eh, it seems much more the fault of social media than Obama.
