What is your opinion of the arguably the most successful franchise in all of sports?

It was my second favorite team....until they started winning again and I stopped paying attention to baseball.  Don Mattingly was my favorite player when I was a kid.

Considering we've done well with their also-rans - Burnett, Martin, Cervelli, Nova, I kind of like them now, where I hated them before.  They've become a good farm system for the Pirates.

One of my favorite sports franchises, although I'm probably biased living in the NYC area.  Smiley

The rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees may be heating up tonight.

Really? The 1996-2001 Yankees were the best teams in baseball history. The 2009 championship was especially sweet for the city.

The late 20s and mid 50s Yankees would like to have a word with you behind center field at Yankee Stadium.  And it was a day game, so Mickey and the Babe are already plastered...good luck.

Those Yankees were good, but you can't underestimate the '09 Yankees. They won 103 games. 103 games!

As a fan of an elite team, I like other elite teams. I was rooting for a Yankees-Cardinals World Series last year.

Evil empire, Proving money can buy championships for over 100 years.

The Yankees were great in the '20s and '30s and '40s and '50s and early '60s because they had the best front office to find the best players, not because of money. There wasn't any free agency then where money would be useful. If money were the only thing that mattered, the team that dominated the twentieth century would have been the Giants, who had far more resources at the beginning of the Harding administration than did the Yankees.

Uh, the 2009 Yankees had the 18th-best winning percentage and 50th-best Pythagorean winning percentage in franchise history, meaning that they were below-average for a Yankees team since the acquisition of Babe Ruth.

The greatest team in professional sports, a title perhaps shared with the Green Bay Packers.

Franchise sports = auto HP.

And the "greatest" franchise team in the world is the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

I would have loved a Yankees-Cardinals World Series in 2015 too. It would have had higher ratings than the Mets-Royals World Series last year. The Yankees and the Cardinals should have met in the 2009 or 2012 World Series.

The greatest baseball team in American history.

They are hated because "New York" is a codeword for all things "sinful" and "foreign", as Lee Harvey Cruz said in the primaries. The haters can pretend its about the Yankees having too much money but we all know what its really about.

The worst teams in baseball are the Red Sox (Pedro Martinez attacked Don Zimmer on the field) and the Atlanta Braves (John Rocker's infamous rant against NYC).

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. They're hated in New England because it's tradition to hate them and outside New England simply because they've been so overwhelmingly dominant throughout their history--people have developed a similar (and understandable) dislike of the Red Sox as they've started winning more and sucking up more airtime and coverage in general west of the Taconics. The things you're discussing certainly might contribute, but the dislike would still exist even disregarding both money and whatever cultural or racial insinuations specifically it is that you--a poster with the username 'Pim Fortuyn'--are trying to make.

I've never met anybody who hates the Mets.

Zimmer charged Martinez first (not that that excuses Martinez escalating it but still, it's incredibly disingenuous to say 'Martinez attacked Zimmer'). Agreed on the Braves.

If you're gonna argue like that, you must include the Reds (The Cueto/LaRue incident), Giants (Marichal/Roseboro), and White Sox (never forget 1919). Point is, every team has a bad moment. And to your other point, I've lived in New York City my entire life and I can't stand the team and their asshole supporters. And I'm totally cool with the Mets.

The only thing worse than petit-bourgeois reactionary ressentiment against metropolitan areas is the paranoid persecution complex that well-heeled people from those areas develop in response.

By the way, a much better rap on the Red Sox is that they were the last team to integrate and still uphold the memory of the virulently racist Yawkeys. That's genuinely an embarrassment to the team and its fans.
