New Election: 1934 Nebraska Amendment General Election Results

This is the results of the 1934 referendum which made Nebraska the only US state with a nonpartisan unicameral legislature.

Somewhat of an east-west divide but not very strong considering the amendment passed in the west as well, with very strong results in some counties. The highest percentage for "Yes" was in from Red Willow - 74.42%, while the lowest was in Keya Paha - 43.98%.

One concern was the loss of representation. Nebraska had something like 25 senators and 50 representatives, so in western counties, legislators would be shared with more counties. The referendum was in middle of the depression, and the amendment was sold in part as a cost cutting measure. It also had the backing of US Senator George Norris.

Bicameralism is meh, but a modern legislature probably should have political parties.

Bicameralism makes no sense for a non-federal entity, like all fifty US states. Especially after the Supreme Court ruled districts with unequal population (in many states each county had one State Senator) unconstitutional.

Nebraska's legislature does have parties, but they're unofficial.
