Can down ballot affects the top of the ticket?

I will give an example.

Some are claiming that the HB2 (aka the Bathroom Bill) which is currently dragging down the Republican Gov. McCrory is helping North Carolina move faster to the left and helping Clinton win the state.

Of cause, it should be mentioned that North Carolina has already been moving fast to the left prior.

NOTE: Please ignore the incorrectly worded poll.

I think you have it mistaken. Reverse coattails would suggest a specific downballot candidate is causing people further up on the ticket to do better, whereas in what you said, it's just HB2 making Republicans in general look bad to voters in North Carolina. It's an issue affecting the image of the GOP in the state, not a candidate.

As for the idea of a candidate further downballot juicing up their party's prospects higher up on the ticket, no, I'm not convinced that this is a thing.

No, but mega coattails are. The reason NC is turning blue is that the mega coattails from Maryland are travelling south to VA and NC.

And don't forget about Delaware's Amtracking up to PA... Plus VT's angering NH women.

They definitely seem to be a thing in some countries (Australia comes to mind), but there's little evidence of them in the US.
