Well duh, he was a KGB man, you think that as soon as he felt secure in power that he wouldn't revive something like it?

Yeah, the idea that Russia ever stopped doing KGB-like activities is laughable.

I think what's newsworthy about this is that it's all being centralized into one, apparently highly visible, agency again.

There are parts of the Russian state security apparatus that haven't even bothered to change their name since the days of the USSR because they don't even pretend they're any different.

True. I guess this means Putin is now confident enough in his position not to even bother with appearances.

I'm rather excited by this. Aside from Anna Chapman honeypotting a cabinet member, I don't remember any compelling real life spy dramas. We need more John Stonehouses and what have you. I want to live in interesting times, this ISIS stuff is getting boring Tongue.

MGB, eh? Could probably have come up with a better name than that.

What's the point of changing the name? Why not just keep FSB? It'd save money.

It's not just renaming, it's a major reorganization - MGB will probably be FSB + FSO (Secret Service) and SVR (external intelligence), while the Investigative Committee will be returned to the Prosecutor General's office. Also, Ministry of Emergency Situations's duties will be shared between Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Internal Affairs.

So yay for bureaucracy? I'm not tremendously familiar with how the old KGB used to work, but that seems terribly inefficient.
