Military Times / Syracuse University poll of 2207 active duty service members, conducted Sep. 8-15.

http://www.militarytimes.com/articles/this-poll-of-the-us-military-has-gary-johnson-tied-with-donald-trump-in-the-race-for-president

Trump 37.6
Johnson 36.5
Clinton 16.3
Stein 1.2

The breakdown by ranks is very interesting:

Officers:

Johnson 38.6
Clinton 27.9
Trump 26.0
Stein 0.5

Enlisted:

Trump 39.8
Johnson 36.1
Clinton 14.1
Stein 1.3

Trump leads among the Army and Marine Corps; Johnson among the Navy and Air Force.

I still find it telling that they love Johnson. General college grads don't poll like that.

Clinton must do really bad with minorities in the military.  Enlisted has the most non whites and she does horrible there.  I wonder what the breakdown is.

Doubtful. Most of my fellow non-White Airmen in OKC are pro-Hillary.

So active soldiers are less likely to support Trump than the national average?

On the contrary, less than two fifths are supporting him.

Isn't this the one that Johnson brags that he's leading active duty folk in?

Trump is in 3rd place amongst active duty officers?

Makes sense considering active duty officers are one of the groups that Trump has insulted most explicitly.

Is it bad that at this point I think a military coup would be (while terrible) still preferable to a TrumpMiller presidency?

Not surprising considering Clinton is directly responsible for the death of so many people in Iraq, the many who came wounded & all the sufferings henceforth. It is beyond me someone with that kind of record gets called a capable leader.

The sad part is she is not even learning from the same, followed through a bad policy in Libya. And proposes more of the same in Syria. Without Bernie & pressures from the progressive faction & from the general people, I think we would see huge ground troops now. She is a "hawk" if there ever was one for a Democrat.

This is not an endorsement for Trump, just an anti-Clinton vote!

I really doubt Clinton is doing this poorly with enlisted, considering the ethnic diversity of that population.  In past years, the Military Times poll results never really matched results on military bases.  I'm not saying the vote on bases is perfectly representative of this population, either, but I'd trust them over this poll.

Usually when Military Times has released polls in the past, the results were from within their own subscriber base, which...would almost certainly have a heavily-conservative bent.

Was this an actual scientific poll that surveyed 2,000 likely voters/service-members from the electorate at-large, or did they survey 2,000 likely voters/service-members from within their own ranks?

Military Times poll in 2012 was 66% for Romney and 26% for Obama, so, well. there's that.

I should have read the article before I commented.  They do seem to be clearing claiming in the article it's a random-sample scientific poll where they've separately verified most of the respondents' statuses.  That's...pretty impressive, considering it's a n=2,207 poll of a small slice of the American population.

sex distribution is representative.  ethnic distribution is about half for blacks what you'd expect from a representative sample.

I wonder how this would compare to 2012? That is, how much of this is soldiers favouring libertarianism/protest votes vs how much is just NeverTrump conservatives?

Soldier seems like an occupation that would be predisposed to both of those camps.

I still find it telling that they love Johnson. General college grads don't poll like that.

Career officer is a pretty unique occupation compared to the average degree holder.
