Will having two candidates with a chronic history of dishonesty and with a majority of Americans viewing neither favorably make people wake up and stop things like this from happening again?

If Trump wins, we'll all wake up just before the bombs hit; then we'll all die.

more like, put them to sleep.

we don't like these two candidates, so it's not likely that we're going to roll over and ask either of them for some tenderness, or even to share the blanket.  "Just don't wake me" will be the average American response.  I know it's mine.

Whether it gives the two corporate-controlled parties greater or less leverage remains to be seen.  That's probably the more important question.  In one analysis, opportunities will exist for alternative ideologies to emerge, especially on the right, where the party leaders have largely sold out.  In another, Republican and Democrat party leaders will cynically determine that they could put Mickey Mouse on the ballot and still get at least 40% of the vote, minimum.  This is a real test.

One can only hope that this election helps both parties to realize that their nomination processes are deeply flawed and obscenely antiquated.

It is absurd that all fifty states do not have an equal say in their party's nominee, and it is equally ridiculous that one candidate should get a gigantic head start just because party leaders say so.

This election has, so far, proven that most of America does not want to wake up.

If Hillary isn't president on Nov 9th then America made a historic mistake.

Well, since Obama will still be president on November 9th, I suppose the mistake has been made already.

This election is either the beginning or the end of an era. But it certainly is a turning point of a sort.

Nah. Especially if it's Kanye West vs. Donald Trump in 2020.

There's nothing to "wake up" to when the alternatives were either wild idealists (Cruz, Sanders) or the most uncharismatic cardboard cutouts you can imagine (Kasich, O'Malley).

Also laughable nutty candidates, but not as bad as Trump (Carson, Webb, Fiorina). Also Trump-lites (Christie, Huckabee)

This demonstrates one of three scenarios:

1. This year was an aberration composed of a perfect storm of mediocre candidates
2. This is truly the best our current political establishment could produce, which only signifies how inept and appalling they all really are
3. This represents what American culture has become and our candidates are but a reflection of us as a people at this time

Of those, the third should terrify us all the most while we hopelessly wish that the first is miraculously true. My bet is that it's a combination of 2 and 3 - but mostly 3. Our society (along with virtually the entire Western world) is undergoing an unprecedented transformation that we're only now beginning to witness on the national political scene. This isn't going away anytime soon; not the polarization, the heated rhetoric, the demagoguery, or the frequent protests. Fortunately, like all transformative periods, this one will pass and we will become a better people on the other side. We really need a good, inspirational leader soon. And, although I support Clinton, she's simply not inspirational. Trump would only exploit our divisions and exacerbate them for political gain while mismanaging every other aspect of governance. Hopefully, 2020 or 2024 offers better options.
