I could see Trump supporting the idea of direct democracy, by which I mean supporting the institution of a national initiative and referendum process, if he had some knowledge of it (not sure about that).  The idea of going over the head of the elites through a national referendum process could be just something he could get behind to rattle his opponents.  He'd also be channeling his inner-Hofer, who has campaigned in Austria for such measures.
Of course opponents could point to him trying to institute some kind of plebiscitary dictatorship, and we all know just how fascist Switzerland is.   Anyway, if any recent national candidate was likely to support such an idea Trump would seem to fit the bill, and supporting it would force Clinton to either back it as well, or come out against the idea.

It would feed the Louis Napoleon comparison.

Trump most certainly, does not believe the people should rule.
