I've been thinking about starting a new series of threads in which we vote on our favorite country in each region of the world. The first continent we'll be starting with is Europe, and we'll be covering countries in Western Europe first. Here's the map I'll be using to determine which region each country is in: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7a/Europe_subregion_map_UN_geoscheme.svg/680px-Europe_subregion_map_UN_geoscheme.svg.png

I'm not expecting super high participation, so I might not continue these if this thread only gets a couple of votes, but if enough people participate, I'll continue this series. This poll will run for three days, and I might do a run-off if the results are close enough.

Anyway, France for me, though many of these countries are great.

Germany's gone to the dumps recently, so I voted for Monaco.

Netherlands, despite the racism (would have been Germany if it wasn't becoming just as racist).

That particular verse is quite frowned upon. But I'd imagine any sign of nationalism is frowned upon in Germany, unless it's at a soccer game.

Netherlands (normal)

It's not part of their anthem anymore: only the third strophe of the Deutschlandlied, which is about freedom and justice, is now the national anthem.

Still it's obviously not illegal.

No.  You'd get dirty looks and an explanation as to why they don't say it anymore.

It is important to point out that it doesn't imply Germany should conquer all, like we like to assume.  Instead, it means Germany before everything else in the world.  You can like France.  You can like America.  But Germany comes first.  Nationalistic...but not necessarily empire seeking.

Now... Deutschland, Deutschland über allen?  That means take the world and trample it with Germany.  Which is what Hitler tried to do while singing the other, more innocuous lyrics...so they figured just skip the verse.
